Clown Racing in Michigan, May 17, 2008
« on: October 18, 2007, 06:57:06 AM »
For the first time, we have added Clown Racing to the schedule of our contest at Rouge Park, Detroit, Michigan.  There has been some interest around here and we had had entries at The Brodak and the AMA Nats.  We've heard some vague statements of intent-to-build, so here's a chance to bring it on without the 356/231 mile road trip.

We will share time with Perky Speed on the Big Circle.  They both use .015" x 52'-6" lines, so you could build both and use the same strings.

We will start out with a 16-lap time trial, just like Perky.  Those that prove flyable will progress to 7-and-a-half munute racing and a 15-minute finale'.

Models must comply with either The Brodak Rules or NCLRA Rules - or both.  A the moment, both outfits have 2007 rules on their sites.  If they change for 2008, we will accept models that comply with either 2007 or 2008 revs.  Bottom line,  run what you have, if it's legal in Carmichaels and/or Muncie.

We will have genuine F2d fuel for everybody

In this event, you can use any engine up to .1999.  At The Brodak, this is further limited to side exhaust only, but The NCLRA lets you use any engine of that size.

You are limited to only one ounce of fuel.  This makes it interesting, since a very fast gas hog engine will make more pit stops than a slower, more economical one.  There are countless old .15's around, put out of business by F2d rules changes, as well as engines intended for RC quarter midget, Goodyear, vol libre, and other other events. There is little need to actually buy a new engine.

The NCLRA allows on Flying Clowns.  Brodak also allows the Circus Prince, which has the same wing and a more stylish fuselage.   NCLRA wants two wheels, Brodak lets you use one or two.  Any normal builder should be able to knock out a couple of these littel beauties in under two weeks.  See you in May.

The standard fuel is a key element.  In any "mileage race", some people would run funny fuel with dangerous addatives that extend run time while damaging engines and often the people who handle the stuff.   If anybody seriously intends to use a Diesel, contact me in advance.  I will obtain a jug of factory-selled fuel from the Prop Shop.  No funny fuel for you either !

2007 winners at both the Brodak and the Nats did about 170  laps in seven-an-a-half minutes and 290 laps in 15 minutes.

Weeeeelllllll,,,,,

This won't be much of a warmup for The Brodak, but it will still be a good change to:

Get ready of Muncie, and

Use up you old "illegal" Pencilwaynia stuff.

Maybe if you decide to knuckle under and go LA, you can take  a run at the BIG planes.
