100 Mile LA 25 Sport Race - Toronto - Sept 27, 2008....
« on: October 01, 2008, 07:09:13 AM »
This was the second consecutive running of this race, which dates back to 1956 when was first run as 500-lapper with 40-rats.

The 2007 event was run as 1400-lap race with 25 pit stops.  You were allowed to use a backup model, but nobody did.  In addition to the nominal LA 25, the Fox 35 Stunt was optional.  Everybody involved was used to 10-mile racing, but 100 miles was an undiscovered country.  The race went off without incident, and the Stefanovic/Hanson team breezed in 13 minutes ahead of the peliton.

Steve Stafanovic and Peter Hanson 1:28.6
Brad LaPointe and Stuart Henderson 1:41.16
Pat MacKenzie and Ron Peters 1:42.39
Paul Smith and Vadim Polak 1:45.02 (Fox 35 Stunt)
Chris Brownhill and John McFayden 1:57.12
Bill Bowmer and John Jerbek 2:01.19

The 2008 100 Mile Sport Race Marathon

Now that we know we can do it, most of us came back with "better" stuff and the intent to win, not just try to finish.

We were greated with a several (well-done) rules changes aimed at further leveling the field:

Pit stops were increased from 25 to 30, thereby reducing lappage from 54 to 45 and increasing the probablity of misfortune.
The prop was defined as one particular black Master 8x6 standard (no schmitar).
Engines were inspected for stockness by Keith Morgan.
The fuel upgraded from Cool Power to Ritch's F2D.

In the first 3-up heat there was a 3-plane dustup at 38:05, resulting in a full course red flag.  After a time out to clear the track and assure safety, a flying restart was performed and all three teams were able to continue.  The second heat went off without incident, other than individual equipment issues not affecting other teams.

My right hand is still swelled up.  My plane weighs 30 ounces and Vadim (former Russian F2C pilot) really smokes it in.  I'm not complaining, he saves me 5-10 seconds compared to coming in soft.  But I need to build a stronger & lighter plane next year.

Some of the guys with starting problems probably still have muscle spasms in their flipping arm.  The pilots, ranging in age from 14 to 65+. took it pretty well.

The yellow Ringmaster was used as a backup for two different planes that were taken behind the pit wall.

The silver plane is Steve Stefaovic's.  Clearly the fastest, and defending champion.  But it got sick midway in this year's race and finished 4th, but it finished.
