Found this awesome photo on this morning's AV webcast. Amazing paint detail that would really be a winner.

That scale pattern reminds me of something a bit different. An aerobatic indoor R/C foamy. Every 1/10 gram counts there so finishes are not all that great... The guy though that the screen net might be found at hardware stores.

Oh, Lord, Donaldo! Wouldn't THAT be something! Now I could even use THAT color of green on a stunt plane if I could EVER take the time to do that design........

BTW: It reminds me of the Charger that Bill Elliott drove with the same scheme, but in VIPER RED, about 10 years ago in NASCAR. Entire car was a snake skin wrap........

I have to come up with a new colour scheme for a 3rd model in the works.. Doing that isnt difficult. Id love to know what that wing looks like.

But it's green. A no-no in the northwest unless you can fly by feel. Other than that, I like it.

Ah, the airframe has two coats of unthinned clear on it. Needs another then a bit of sanding and covering.

The pilots name is Jason Newburg. You can see the top of the plane at Aerobatic Aircraft of Texas website. There are quite a few Youtube videos also, just search for his name or the "Oakley Viper Pitts"

OK, for you guys that really ARE good at laying out paint schemes, how would "YOU" lay out the scales on the fuselage? (serious question!

I am no good at it but if you want it consistent you need to mask it. On that foamy I posted, I think it only took holding a honeycomb pattern net over the area and making a pass with the rattle can. For something bigger and higher quality, you'd have to produce a honeycomb patterned sheet that you can stick on the plane.... and peel off without pulling out any finish.

Spot on..

Obviously starting with the white - then mask off for the green lower 1/2

Id start with the base coat 1st - Which is the Light green colour this will be the Internal scale colour.

Then you would have to digitally create a hexagonal pattern out of frisk paper that gave you a 4 mm outline space between shapes. Would depend on how large you wanted the pattern. Once thats Layed over - The trick would be layering it over the top of the fuse - you couldnt do it out of 1 complete cutout - you would have to layer them in sections.

Once thats layer Spray your deeper green colour for the outline - lift and reveal. - Then detail the white as your saw fit.

The second way is to use a dragon scale template.

This would be the reverse method - start with a darker colour as your base - then airbrush the lighter shades in over it.

My preference would be the 1st option - If I had to do it.

Nice color but I'd certainly have trouble finding it with the cornfields in the background.

Yeh...now that you mention it....It does look like that Avenger is missing a whole bunch of extra ribs.
I never really cared too much for CREAM COLORED AIRPLANES and that paint job to me...was waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay out there beyond my grasp.
Speaking of paint jobs...that STUNNINGLY AWESOME PAINT WORK ON YOUR AVENGER IS A REAL WORK OF ART AT IT'S FINEST!

I once painted a plane with "dragon scales". the thing was painted sort of a cream yellow then dark green. I used a hand held template sort of like they use for "real flames". Came out pretty well. Sucker was a lot of work and the plane was only a decent flier. I don't remember what happened to it now. Probably 20 years ago.
