The $4.00 Paint Stand...
« on: March 08, 2010, 10:49:08 PM »
Here's an idea that I just gave a try tonight. At Home Depot I picked up a piece of 3/4" conduit, some PVC tube and fittings that would just let the conduit slide through and rotate, a couple of small "U" bolts with matching wing nuts, and a couple of hitch pins. I then cut, hammered, drilled, and assembled the conduit and PVC tubing as shown. Then, I just drilled holes into the stationary platform of my trusty "Workmate" for the "U" bolts and fastened the whole assembly with the wing nuts underneath and PRESTO, I had a portable paint stand! The hitch pins are really just for insurance so that the conduit holding the model can't work it's way out of the holder as you're spinning it around during painting, really ruining your evening. You can pop the hitch pins out to slide the model out of the holder if necessary, and the whole works goes on and off of the "Workmate" in a few seconds. o2oP

Great Idea; I've been using a paint stand (purchased from Byron Barker . . . am I remembering the name right?) and just love it! I'm going to work on one that holds the plane in a vertical position too. I may feed off of your ideas.

Yep, the Byron Barker (C.F. Slattery?) paint stand is a great piece too. I just don't have one and I was determined to get to painting tonight without hanging my models from the rafters anymore. ;D

Your "stand off" bolt arrangement for the motor mount clamp seems to work well. Looks like you got good coverage all around the motor mounts. Is that an original idea also?

Very slick  H^^. Thanks for the idea. Like Brian, think I'll see what it takes to copy that vertically (don't have a Workmate, for one thing)

I am even a cheaper person.  A peice of dowel rod, 3/4 inch dia.   A peice of scrap ply 1/8 or 1/4 inch thick.  Cut and drill to fit motor mount.  Bolt to the dowel rod.  Clamp the vise I already had to my step ladder.  Weights on other side of step ladder to keep it from tipping over.  Loosen vise to rotate the plane as needed and start painting.   Since then I obtained a paint stand similar to Byron's from a gentleman at VSC several years ago.  Makes life so much easier, even sanding and covering. #^ #^ #^ H^^

I like this! Lightweight, stores easily, and rotates nicely, no 'shudder' from friction.

I have been using my medium-duty rolling engine stand (!) with a sliding internal tube (2" dia.) that has a 3/16" X 1-1/2" flat tongue welded on  for the engine mounts on the fuse. Overkill? Maybe...but it ties up the engine stand, keeping me focused on the painting of the airplane without the temptation to wander back-and-forth to an unfinished assembly job on a V8! LOL

Notice also the little angular tripler that helps to reinforce the fuse/wing joint AND angles the tank a little outboard! Very Kool!

Great job!

I use Doc's method with the dowell and ply and scrap's. Ain't pretty but they work and we keep the $$$ in our pockets.

My "Paint Stand" is even simpler. I ground a flat area onto a 3/8" rod. Then I tapped the rod for (2) 6/32 bolts. The bolts hold on plates for various engines. The plates are made from scrap plate stock (aluminum, steel or even plywood). The Shopmate has a Vee groove. The rod sits in the Vee groove snug it up and you can pivot the airplane. For larger wing spans you might have to block up the Shopmate. Cost is about $3 or $4 for the rod. Have done many airplanes with this set up over the last 15 years.
