  Gonna try some Darma silk soon and wondered if it has "sizing" in it and if so, how do you remove it?

I use silk from Dharma and have never had to remove sizing.

Same here. Just apply the Dharma silk as is. Some people wash it first, but I have not had to do that.

Jim, I went to the Dharma silk site and it is pretty busy (a lot of choices). Would you please let me know what type, weight, or name of the silk you use. I wolud like to try it. Thanks.---LOUIE  H^^ D>K

I read every silk message that comes through.  While I haven't tried it yet, you'll see the crew about evenly divided between "5M" and "8M" china silk. (They're unanimous about the 'china' part).

5M is lighter.  8M is a bit heavier, but its proponents claim it's so much easier to fill the weave that the difference is a wash by the time the plane is finished.

I'm going to get some of each, if and when I try silk.

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

I have only used the 5mm white from Dharma. It is also a little tighter weave than the old model silk we use to use, and does not take much to fill the grain. I bought an 11 yard bolt for $2.20 a yard several years ago. I have covered 6 planes so far with it.

That's GORGEOUS!!!!! Is the rest of the plane silk and dope?? I don't know why at age 53 I'm reverting back to where I started in modeling back in the 60's. I'm just not interested in ARF's hovering around at 1/3 throttle flown by someone who has never built a model airplane. At least that what seems to popular these days.

Wade, I think that's what a lot of us are doing. I started back into CL about three years ago and have gone old school. Silk and dope. I love the smell of Ambroid and dope in the morning! Attached is a picture of Magician, finished with silk and dope.

Since using Poly-span and/or SLC I will not go back to silk.   I also use Poly-ester cloth for the different colors on clear coat planes. H^^

 Yes Wade; The whole plane is silk and dope. I do the whole finish with a brush from the wood to the last clear coat, and I think the silk finishes lighter than silkspan. I only use clear for filler, so there is no primer or filler on the plane at all. Brushing dope is good therapy.

I forgot to mention that the silk we use is the Habotai Silk. I just checked there site and I see it has gone up to $2.49 per yard in 11 yard bolts. Not a bad price.

Great looking Magician Larry. I am a big fan of Magicians, and have built 4 so far.

A friend recently used silk over SLC. He reported that is filled quickly with 3 coats of clear as I recall. He did not have problems with puddling, as the SLC acted as a block to over penetration. His finished job is gorgeous, and looks like a super seamless job with plastic. H^^
