Simple question about Coverlite
« on: May 20, 2010, 09:47:28 AM »
So, simple question: can you paint dope (or other stuff I suppose) over Coverlite? Like shooting on trim color? I started to ask this before, but got side tracked. I'm pretty sure someone said yes, but I can find the thread.

Having used Coverite since the late 60's I can say with some certainty that everything that i ever put on top of it stayed on top of it for the life of the model.
The tradgedy is that I don't see regular coverite being made anymore, and how I wish that they would re-introduce silkspun Coverite.
Blame it on Great Pains who buys and decimates every company that it touches.

Dennis, FYI
Coverite is a different animal than CoverLITE.
I used coverite back in the olden days lol, when I was flying RC gliders. We felt the texture added to the performance of the wing in light lift,, that was our story then anyhow,, the major drawback to it was Weight,, it was pretty heavy
For years the rat race had me going around in circles, Now I do it for fun!

Dennis,

Coverlite is the the polyester stuff that is set up to look like dyed silkspan. Supposed to paintable, but I haven't found anything to confirm that. The little info sheet that comes with it doesn't really say.

Randy,

I haven't tried it, but dope and other paints work with polyspan, so I would think that would apply to Coverlite, though I know it does have some sort of filler or film. Heck, try a sample panel and let us know!

The Tower website describes the coating as a "totally fuel-proof resin", and says "...can be painted with Coverite 21st Century spray paint," which is acrylic lacquer.  Naturally they want to sell their own paint.
