SILKING PROBLEM
« on: June 22, 2014, 04:30:50 PM »
i'm covering a wing with silk and dope which i have done many times in the past. it is 8mm silk that i applied by water misting then sealing the perimeter with nitrate dope after aligning and removing the wrinkles by tautening the fabric. after it has dried,i flat brushed a thinned coat of tautening nitrate being careful to prevent the dope from puddling on the back side. then the fabric starts too sag while it dries. bad. i have recovered it three times and still the same. i tried new batches, different dope, different thinner, an undyed version of the same lot of fabric, waiting a day, blow gun, setting it in the sun. next? any thoughts would be appreciated.

thanks, joe

If it were me I would apply the silk wet, (It's in it's most relaxed state then) Pull it tight, wait for it to dry, apply a coat of dope and see if it relaxes again. Make sure when its wet you pull it tight the first time.

robert, the fabric is applied wet and pulled taught. i begin to suspect that is was an issue with the silk, nothing made since. something was causing the silk to relax while the dope was flashing off and then when the dope cured the sags were set and nothing would bring it back taught. i just finished recovering the wing with 5 mm, 2 coats of nitrate, no problems. anybody want to buy a 50 yard bolt of dharma 8mm silk cheap? any thoughts about what might be the problem with the silk?

thanks, joe hunt
