What is a good primer to use before you spray on your color dope?

Thanks

Mike

My primer/filler is talc and clear butyrate dope.   I don't use dope over the automotive grey primer as I do a automotive finish from that  point on. H^^

This is what i use. I use it under Sig and Brodak. I have never had any problem and it is very good at filling in all the little imperfections. It sands very easy too, just give it a few days to get good and hard. I have sanded it the next day but I recommend waiting a couple.

Derek

FYI, my process is: Nitrate, (usually right out of the can without adding thinner, this will seal the wood faster and prevent excess weight) I sand it flat between coats. I apply the silkspan with Nitrate, then I move on to Sig Light Coat. After the Silkspan is on I never use a brush again, everything is sprayed out of a gun. once it is all sealed with light coat I do a filler coat (zinc powder mixed with clear). this is sanded smooth and by this time most of the orange peal should be gone. I seal that with one more light coat of Sig clear (light coat) then I spray the primer. sand the primer and you are ready for your base.

clear with corn starch and a few drops of black color to give the whole mixture gray tint.

Not my invention. George Aldridge of Nobler fame has used corn starch for years.

Well, I can't understand if you are asking about a "primer", "filler", or "blocking coat".  I use all three! Or at least two out of three.  The main thing to remember is that proper sanding techniques are crucial to maintain a light finish.

I use something like Derek does most of the time.  I block sand that until it is only left in the grain and imperfections.  I might have to use more than once application.  Once I get the surface imperfection free, I use a blocking coat.  This can be Duplicolor spray can white primer, sanded with 600, or a butyrate very light gray made by adding black to white until it is just the slightest gray.  Then color dope or basecoat/clearcoat depending on the structure.

I use a recipe for filler/primer that I've posted before. Used to us lacquer primer/filler for cars, but the stuff has become scarce so I make my own.

Not only scarce, but expensive.  Had to go get another can as that is what I put on the P-47.   $84.00 for a quart.  The man behind the counter was even complaining about the price.  Then again the stuff is so thick it made me think of the old HobbyPoxy filler we used to be able to get.  Tell you what also,  sure takes a long time to sand with 400 grit paper.  Again I am not going for 20 point finish.   H^^

Plenty on the shelf at my local body shop supply, about $25 a quart.
Brand is "Finish Pro".   It comes in white, grey, or red oxide.
Can also be ordered online..

Derek What grit sandpaper do you use on the Nason primer?

Addendum: I thought I better give an explanation as to why I'm asking. Generally speaking, atuomotive primers are designed for harder substrates then what we would see ie. hard metal as opposed to balsa wood. Consequently, I wonder what grit of sandpaper you would use to reflect this change if any.
