Two part aerosol clears!
« on: August 17, 2014, 06:37:17 AM »
Seems there are many modelers using many different clears to fuel proof their painted models. It would probably be a long list of the various Brands of clear coat products used, with some offering better results than others.

I'm considering the use of a good quality clear coat product because I now have a few models needing that fuel proof clear coat. I have to choose wisely.

So the question is: Has anyone ever used these products?

I have not used the Max 2K on planes, but I use it on my racing outrigger and mono boats that
use 60% nitro. I have shot it over Rutoleum, Acrylic model RC car paint, Krylon.
All have worked beautifully. It has never yellowed on me and some of the colors I have used it over are
flourecsents and white, yellow, ect.

Once the can is set up and you have shaken it for the 2 minutes, I have found that it has a shelf life
of about 1 1/2 weeks in HOT weather. In cold weather, well, maybe a couple days in the garage MAX.

I am planning on using it once again when I get a couple CL projects completed in a couple months.

Carl,

Thank you for the reply.

What kind of coverage will you get?

Tack coat finish coat? One wet coat?

Will one can do two small models at 42" in span?

What clear are you using on model airplanes?

Thanks again for the reply.

I spray it a couple times times tack types then a final wet coat. (but not too wet.)

I have been using low temp iron on films and some left over K&B super poxy paint for finishing, but only small planes up to about 35 power.

This will be used on a couple larger ships.

oh, and if you spill raw fuel on it and forget about wiping it up, not to worry, I had done it
on my boats with 60% nitro andjust taken a paper towel and wiped it off.   :)

when I spray this over Rustoleum, I wait for a week or so to let the color fully gas off.
If the temps in your area are BELOW around 75, go for 2 weeks then spray the clear on it.

I usually wait for a couple days before handling the boat hull, then it is good to go.
I have 4 boats shot with it and they are over 4yrs old. looks like the day I sprayed them.

Charles,
I used Spray Max 2K Urethane (2 part) in the rattle can on my El Diablo about last year worked great, no runs, no problems going over the Sig dope, very shinny, very fuel proof. Has a shelf life after activation of 10 days just sitting in the house. If you put it in the refrigerator it could be double that. Light dust coat then a single wet coat adds about 1 oz. Should get two ships from one can.

Well, it's carved in stone.

I ordered a two part clear from Eastwood.  #^

Decided on the matt finish for the P-40 Tomahawk. 24.95

Might even do the 007 Skyfall with the same can. Sans the shine, save money.  n~

I hope to have the can by Christmas.

Just wanted to do a follow up on this Thread because there was participation, great suggestions and good advice.

I did paint two models with this product. I purchased the gloss from Eastwood which is also the Spray Max.

I now have two semi-matt cans from Spray Max and the cans are identical. Eastwood pays for their name brand.

The semi-matt is for the Mig-3. These are the two models I used the Eastwood gloss clear on.

Even without my glasses they look pretty good to me. Can I say that?

You decide.

This was a good thread, so I thought I'd bring it back to life.

The Thread was informative, the product source was named and proof of use, by at least three modelers, adds credibility to the product's use. Easy to use and works well. A good thing.

I have two more models cleared with the 2K areosol cans mentioned in this Thread.

Charles, a very nice job on all of your airplanes.

Just wondering, can the Eastwood Gloss clear be color sanded and buffed out, or is the finish on your planes just as it comes out of the spray can?

Did you indeed spray them outdoors?

Thanks,

Vince

Vince,

Thanks for the reply, thanks for taking a look and a special thanks for the complement.

The finish on all my model planes are right out of the aerosol can and painted "outdoors" as I said. Every one of them was painted outdoors, honestly, and not polished. Polish? I don't do polish.  LL~

Soon to be another model painted outdoors, the Stuka Tank Buster, but that model will have a semi-gloss finish like the Mig-3. Semi-gloss is available in aerosol cans also.

I just love the outdoors.

Here's the Stuka. I'm finishing up the camo. It will absolutely be cleared outside.

The outdoors is my spray booth. ;D

BTW.

Carl, Dennis and a few other guys could probably answer your questions about aerosol clears better than I because they have been using aerosol clears longer than I have.

Before this, I was spraying the stuff out of a gun. I'm all done with that. Well, maybe the GBR-3.  ;D

Thanks again for the reply.

Just thought I'd make mention that this 2K Spray Max aerosol clear is now, today, offered on ebay for only 18.00 with free shipping.

I purchased two cans for my Gee Bee R-3.

A great deal and a great price!

I know I started this Thread 4 years ago, but I've had such great success using the 2 part clears available in aerosol cans, I decided to pitch the product a bit more.

These are the last two models I recently cleared with this 2 part product described above.

All my models are finished using aerosol cans.

The Stuka Tank Buster, however, was painted with an airbrush using Tamiya brand paints. These paints come in small bottles and the colors are available in the correct color for the aircraft you're modeling. Mostly used for plastic modeling.

My Stuka is modeled after a WW II Stuka scheme.

I produced all the vinyl graphics and spray the clear coat over them.

The good and bad about Spray Max is that it's still in an aerosol can.  It's very useful product, but you have accept to the limitations that come with using spray cans and the accompanying lack of control you have as the user.

A small detail gun and small compressor setup really isn't very expensive and you have total control over the amount, mix, spray pattern, ect.
Whether it's from an aerosol can or a spray gun, you are now using death paint, so the risks and rewards are the same.   I much prefer now to use a detail spray gun.  My $0.02
