Painting your Pilot Busts
« on: January 20, 2012, 11:30:27 PM »
No, I didn't say "painting your pilot's busts" or "Painting your pilot's butt"...lol

I'm getting ready to paint/ seal my cockpit area with Minwax poly and will then detail it and the bust with something other than model enamel.

Is there a specific craft paint, laytex or acrylic at Hobby Lobby I'm looking for?

I cringe at the thought of buying multiple bottles of "$$cale model paint". Just need a half doz. colors (set?) and I can tint and tone the rest.
I'd like to seal it with a satin clear when I'm done. ...then install the canopy. (Brodak Corsair)

If you do a little bit every day it will get done, or you can do it tomorrow.

I use the standard acrylic hobby paint. Make sure you clean yoru pilot figure thouroughly before painting him.
I use comet/ajax type cleaner with a toothbrush, then rinse thourgougly,, take yoru time, let each color dry well before painting the next.

I think I use the same thing as Mark, they are called Apple Barrel (some of them, I think).

I do use white primer after assembling the bust.  A few jars of the acrylics, sometimes I catch them in half off sales.

Hi Guys,

I thought I would add a tid bit here.  After Mark posted a picture of a pilot that a fellow in England sells.  I ended up getting two WWII vintage pilots from him through ebay!  They are awesome.  Almost too detailed!  One for the Johnston P-47 (1/8th scale) and the other for my Paul Mantz racing Mustang (1/9th scale).  If I can get them painted they will really look awesome (so much detail that I don't know if I can cover it all!).
