Painting Lines
« on: September 28, 2024, 04:02:32 PM »
Are there any articles or threads that explain how to paint lines start to finish. I can mask off a line and paint it but it has ridges so, must be some trick to it I don't know.

Thanks,
MM :)

credit card trick may help knock them down. Too thick of a coat will make it very difficult to remove them. Use thin paint, build them up with 3 coats, let dry, you can even lightly scuff the color with 1500. After that spray with clear 50/50. 4 coats. Skuff sand clear with 1200. Then spray one or 2 wet coats over it

Are you talking about panel lines or the paint line between two colors?

I am far from an expert, but I usually put down a strip of tape the width of the line as a guide, then butt more tape on either side, then pull off the center. Then just paint it.

It depends on the colors.  For a dark stripe over a light color I do it Brett's way.  For a light stripe over dark colors I paint the stripe first oversized then mask it and paint the dark colors around it.  If I am using Red and I want a white stripe I use white for the masking color and do the whole plane with just enough extra color around the stripe.  Yellow is another color that doesn't hide changes in background color quickly.

And if you really want to go wild with lines (and curves), take a look at the article, "Another Adventure – Paint Masks and Tucson, AZ". I wrote about using vinyl paint mask for the first time at http://flyinglines.org/nunes.paintmask.pdf

Enjoy,
Dennis

If you are using dope, and you intend to shoot clear as a final step in finishing, then lightly wet sand at a 45 degree angle across the ridge with 2000 grit.  When several coats of clear go over it will be quite smooth.  At least it works for me.  I have also done the same with Klass Kote with a 2K clear, and dope with 2K clear.  Good luck.
