Paint mask materials? What to use?
« on: October 24, 2010, 07:56:09 AM »
I'm getting ready to paint on (Rust-oleum) 3 color Natl. Insignia and some numbers on a Carrier plane and was needing to know what material to use for a paint mask. What am I looking for at Hobby Lobby?
I'll also need to find a circle cutter or template. Do you recommend a swiveling x-acto blade? Not interested in decals.

If you do a little bit every day it will get done, or you can do it tomorrow.

Paint masking with any type of paint requires the proper tape and materials to make the job come out the way you want and be as easy to use as possible.  Proper tape will make you life a lot easier.  I highly recommend using 3M fine line tapes and Finesse Pinstripping tape for all your tape needs.  These are made for detail masking and use adheasive that isn't affected by most paints and is easy to apply and to remove after the paint dries.  Use "green" fine line and Finesse tape for straight lines and "blue" fine line for curved work.  For large paint masks you can use frisket paper which would be my last choice, clear shelf paper ( the self adheasive type) or if you really want the proper material go to sigh shop and see if they will sell you some vinyl masking material.  Brand names would be Avery, Gerbermask or the one I feel is best Macmask by Mactac.

All sign shops carry mask material. It's a low tack vinyl that can be easily removed. If need be, it can be applied with the surface wet. This is for correct placement.

Walk in any sign shop and ask for mask scraps. If they have them you'll get them. If they don't, they will save some for you when they do their next mask job.

Might have to wait a bit, but they will be for free.

Yes, I have a sign shop and make model graphics. Build models too!

Doug,

Maybe I can help you out.
I've custom cut stars and bars low tack paint masks for several modelers. PM me and let's discuss your needs.

Stan
