New(?) material from Stewart Systems
« on: April 05, 2009, 09:10:35 AM »
Last week-end I attended an alumni meeting with an EAA member giving a talk on recreational flying. After the meeting I questioned him on the local availability of Certified or Randolph’s dope. I was told there was none in the Sarasota/Bradenton area. But he did tell me about a group called Stewart Systems that sells a product called EkoCote. This is a water based finishing product that is available in a one part, or two part formula. Best I could get from them was “All the usual colors”. I didn’t hear anything about clear coat. But the person that responded was an R/C’er (possibly an owner!) who loved the product. See Below…

Hi Ward,

I have done several models with our products and it is a dream to use.  The
fabric process is odorless and can be done in the house without any
problems.  I have done a 1/4 scale J-3 Cub, 1/4 scale Aeronca C3 and a sport
bipe.  The latest that has been done is a 1/4 scale Bellanca CH 300 as Miss
Veedol.  Very very nice airplane that was done by a friend of mine for Scale
Masters.

We have color charts and also a very extensive DVD series for how to use our
products.  The same applies to models as full scale and the set is $20.00.

Our top of the line EkoPoly is a water borne catalyzed paint that is applied
in 4 light coats with a 10 minute tack time between coats with the 4th coat
after a 15 minute tack time.  It takes about 45 minutes to apply a paint job
through the 4 coats and can be masked and trimmed the next day.  This paint
is not effected by any model fuels.  The single part paint is applied about
the same way and a small amount of catalyst can be added to it also.

If you would like to give me a call at 509 679-3485 I'll visit with you
about the process.

Sincerely,
Doug Stewart

Anyone out there know anything about this stuff?

Sounds an awful lot like the System 3 water based urethane sold by Nelson Hobbies.  Good stuff, by the way.  Very fuel proof, but hard to get a good shine from polishing, apparently too hard.
