Got some Minwax clear lacquer in the Black can, I think that I was told that it is fuel proof.
What I have in mind is to build a wing using foam, then cover it with silkspan, and brush 3-4 coats of this stuff on it..
Anybody have any suggestions? Thanks a lot

If it's really lacquer, it will eat the foam. If it's something else, it may eat the foam. Test beforehand!

Hi Gil,

I haven't used or even seen the Minwax lacquer, so let us know how it works. It would surprise me if it IS fuel proof.

Gil,

I use Minwax clear lacquer all the time. But, it will eat the foam and is NOT fuel proof. I've tested it with glow fuel to confirm my suspicions. I use it just like everyone else uses clear dope. I don't use dope, but have found this product to work very much the same. I use it to "glue" silkspan/polyspan, to seal balsa before priming, and mixed with a little talc, makes a good filler coat. Good product, but not for a top coat.

Yes most paints will eat foam except water based. There are easy ways to prevent this. I wrote the the article in Feb 1974 American Aircraft Modeler. Call me at 863-899-0656 and I will tell you how. SLEEPY

Hi Gil,

Dope should go over the lacquer, but test it first.

Gil, why don't you just use a low temp film and your worries are over.
