. . . so they don’t come out all goobery like the second pic?

OK at the clear stage! (first pic). Top coat is LustreKote over LustreKote white primer.

Only solution I see is do one side, and wait ‘til it dries?

Hi Larry,

I have never had that problem when using a butyrate dope finish nor when using a two-part polyurethane automotive clear topcoat. I have a feeling that using the LustreKote enamel with its slower drying properties may be what is giving you the problem.

Thanks, and I'll bet you're right. I suppose letting it dry with the elevator drooping down would only make it raggedy looking on the bottom. Hey, it's a half-fast (phonetically) workable solution!
