Filler/dope mix
« on: February 19, 2011, 05:00:12 PM »
I'm to the point on my SV 11 or putting on the filler (Aero 1 mixed in the dope) on the wing.  Do you guys put any of the filler mix over the open bays (polyspan)?

Thanks,

James

I usually put about 3-4 coats of unthinned (or just slightly thinned) clear on the airframe (everything) then sand and usually hit it with fillercoat (again, the whole airframe).

Aero 1?  Isn't that the fuel additive?  Do you mean the zinc stearate?  I do use it more and more than talc and a very, very thin coat on the open bays.  But sanding them is a tedious chore for me. I hate it when I cut through the covering at the rib edge (actually cap strip edge) but it happens.  I find using 0000 steel wool makes this part easier and does a fine job.
Thanks Ty, I do mean the zinc sterate (I shouldn't post when I've taken some of this pain medicine n~).

2 - 3 coats of thinned clear. I also Carbon veil the open bays ontop of silkspan to give strength.

There is nothing wrong wih using the filler over the bay as TY said - be cautious about going through it - we all have done it.

I'm a dinosaur. I mix up clear and talc (or sometime zinc sterate) with some while and a touch of black to get a gray filler.

Yes I do, but I still manage to go through the silk HB~> That's why I am considering sheeting all wings from now on!

Cheers
