EV 3 Finish
« on: January 18, 2014, 02:35:33 PM »
Here it sits with 1 coat of clear. It was sanded before hand with 400, sanded again and again you get the drift. One coat of clear and sanded again. Tomorrow after applying the second coat I will start covering, Two coats brushed and sanded again with 600. After that it goes to spray only.

As it sits here its 20.3 I am shooting for a six ounce finish but they always end up more. It all depends on how much I want to sand.

Well its all Covered and 1 coat of dope. I will sand and apply a second tonight. At this stage its 2 ounces lighter than the 55 ounce Viper before it. Of coarse weight don't matter.

I also like the 'classic' looks of the Viper. And of course, weight matters.  D>K Steve

Is that leading edge kinda pointy? In the 3/4 front view photo it looks like it gets sharper gradually as it gets closer to the wing root too, does it?

 Thanks for the finishing details.

Remember on I-Beam wings you cut the trailing edge of the rib as you put it in place.  Some times  that will throw you a curve as far as the looks of the leading edge.   The plane design looks great Robert aka  Sparky.

Glad to hear it's 2 ounces lighter than the other one!  You really ought to try Monokote on the wing and stab.  You'll probably save another ounce or two.

The canvas is all white now and all together it weighs 51 ounces. I am sure there will be more added. However today the inboard wing had a high rib I just could not deal with. So I tried sanding it and patching the spot. Well that was not satisfactory to me. So on the last try I ripped the covering off the inboard wing ,replaced the rib and re-covered it. Inboard is in clear now and when I catch it up and its white I will post a picture.

No Money-puke on this plane thanks.

Thanks to this mistake I do know what the covering weighs now. .5 ounces per side x4 =2 ounces per wing. Its still gassing off so could be less. But now I know.

If that high rib was on the bottom, would you have made the repair?

My batteries died and I only got one shot but this is where I am at in under 30 days. I have a few small spots to re-sand and repaint white but all in all this one came out good. Its light and straight. All the left is do the few small touchups and paint numbers and few decals then ink and clear. (I forgot the nose art) Unfortunately its 54 ounces as seen here so it should come in around 55.5- 56.5. I don't quite understand why as all the sub assembly's were lighter than the one before it and it has approximately the same amount of paint on it.

Take away the battery and its 45 ounces for a 700 square inch airplane. Should be fine.

As has been stated the best results come from using all the same products. I started with dope and everything after will be dope. JFYI I have not found any paint lighter.

Not done yet. Here is today's progress. I had to build this work bench and clean up a little before going any farther. Shop is clean enough for the next 5 planes.

Tomorrow I am off to the sign shop for some stencils and then paint the remaining lettering . It will be on to ink and clear. But its less than a month old.

I added some shots of the electric mounting and setup.

The plane is looking good!!!!!!

Congrats on another well done model!

The shop looks nice too.

How is it that as you build more you get faster but as I build more I get slower....??

I think you have a twin brother we don't know about who comes over and works the day shift and you work the night shift....

I also noticed this one doesn't have the vertical battery.  But this one is recessed into the wing.  I do the same thing with my planes, cut back the LE 1" or so to move the tank back.

I really like that plane.  When did you design the first one?  Is it classic legal?

I started building this design around 1985 and there is no documentation until 91, So its not classic legal. It has been built in many configurations different wings and construction methods. I like this wing best. I beam and low aspect.

All the lettering is done. Today I will shoot a coat of clear to seal things then ink and 2 more coats of clear. I am thinking that should be done around the fifth of February and that will be exactly 30 days. I wonder how it will do in appearance judging.

It is light, it should come in at 55 ounces. Seems with a plane this size I just cant make them any lighter. Too much fixed weight. If anyone thinks its a easy task to hit this weight and still have  a presentable model please give it a try.

Robert,

Looking at those interior construction photos, you could perform surgery in there. Organized, clean and simple.

How wide is it in that space, or, what is the widest interior measurement inside your fuselage?

Robert,

Looking at those interior construction photos, you could perform surgery in there. Organized, clean and simple.

How wide is it in that space, or, what is the widest interior measurement inside your fuselage?

On this one its 2.5 I.D.

Looks great Sparky, nice and clean. Are you still going to paint the wheelpants though?

A very elegant model and I don't need to restate the obvious, but beautifully crafted.

The best I could do was 62.5 oz. Maybe I could get it to 60 even on the next one but I have been too busy to try. Good job Sparky, it looks good and should fly good.

Derek

I would like to state this is 55 fueled so if I took the average 6 ounces off for the IC fuel ,its a 49 ounce plane.

Airframe less hardware is 25 ounces painted.

Hey Sparky I thought you had a good coach.   I know you have some great judges down/over there.  Just have to remember to not get upset when they tell you what you are doing wrong.   I have received help on  my flying and try to correct my flying, but my excuse and I'm going to stick with it, is I don't  fly enough.  Do you have the critic sheets for someone to use while watching you fly?  Be really great if you had a NATS judge to help you.  I know  it is hard in that doing the simple inside loops you think you are nice a round and on top of each other, but what does it look like outside the circle to the judge? Here is the totals. E Viper 2 weighs 54.45 with a 2826/12 and E Viper 3 weighs 55.10 with the bigger 3515/18. So I would say they came in at the same weight. This one is finished just short of a month. I have so much time left I might build another one.
