Dope over Lustercote
« on: February 04, 2009, 10:11:06 AM »
Has anyone ever sprayed Dope over Lustercote? I have a friend who is gonna spray a canopy shape on a profile plane that is painted with lustercote white. Thanks, Terry B.

I would anticipate problems, Lustercote is an enamel, or Urethane I believe, and as such it is fairly intolerant of solvent reintroduction. Laquer is designed to build adhesion from solvent penetration into the substrates. i would anticipate that if you spray the laquer over the lustercoat with enough material to stick, it will lift and craze the lustercoate, and if you spray the laquer so it doesnt craze the lustercote, it will not stick or be glossy.
My opinion, but somethimes you can get away with stuff you shouldnt,,

Terry,

I tried that years ago and the dope just cracks and crazes over Lustercote.  Since the formulation of Lustercote has changed over the years, I'd suggest doing what Doc suggested, try it on a scrap first.

I have and it doesn't work. Makes kind of a gooey mess of the Lustercote. I will dry eventually, but then crazes. I would not do it again.
