Custom Decals
« on: May 09, 2009, 04:36:09 PM »
I have been doing custom decals for a while, and am not totally satisfied with the results.  I was told by Phil Granderson that he uses the laser printer at Kinko's to copy his artwork.  I got some correct paper and plan to try that out.  Anyone have other suggestions?  For my next model it is an all Butyrate finish from the bottom up and I want it to be extra nice! (a 50% size green box Nobler built by Don Butman  which I am refinishing)

Larry how about some pictures of that 50% Nobler, and keep us posted with the results of the decals.

It's very cute, but y'all reckon that might be overpowered some? And more than just a tad noseheavy ? ? ?

Nice you may need to bore out the motor mounts to get the motor to fit  ;)

Larry,

I think you might have a bit of a ground clearance issue. It might limit your choice of props, after all, those 6" dia. 12 bladers are hard to come by.

I hope that you can keep it under 70 oz. But maybe one of the new .75 engines will pull it off the ground!

A buddy of mine, Bill DelHagen built this gorgeous Firecracker race plane.  He did all the construction, painting, panel lines and detail work, but I provided the decals.

Here are a couple of photos of my Golden Hawk with my own mfg decals.  The color is a bit washed out and the texture of the printing is "grainy".  I am trying to learn how to fix all that.

Cannot tell from the pics posted that there is any grainyness. Looks absolutely fabulous.
I know, the pics can lie to us who can't see it closer so I hope you ghet your problems soved quickly.

I have an idea that you might be able to print on the adhesive side of the Doculam. It doesa work to some extent but I have experienced some streaking because... Well I just don't know why. Seems better results are had by using less ink as in a fast draft mode. I have only tried it with my cheapo HP Deskjet 3520 so I don't have any real comparison.

Sorry, I am not in the decal business, expecially since I haven't got the process down to my satisfaction yet.

Larry, what program do you use to create these decals?  Hopefully something inexpensive.

I use two expensive programs, Corel Graphics Suite and Adobe Graphics Suite.  However, you can do a good job with Microsoft Word if you have a scanner.  Copy artwork with a scanner, place it into a word document and then add text.  There are a number of sites where you can download all kinds of cool fonts to use.  I even snagged a "Marvin the Martian" off the web one time.  Perhaps others can recommend inexpensive graphic arts programs.  I am sure they are out there.

BTW, the Firecracker is a slope glider built by Bill DelHagen.  I only provided the artwork and made the decals.  He did the construction, paint, final deco and trim lines.  It will debut at the Power Slope Scale meet this Saturday.  As Bill says, get appearence judged first, test fly later.

What "paper" are you printing on for decals? And, where can you purchase it? I also use Corel (Draw 12) and have been working on some decal ideas, but haven't found the right medium to print on.

Thanks,

Brian

I get my decal paper from   http://www.decalpaper.com/default.asp
I am sure there are other sources, but this works for me. They have a nice variety of paper.

What are you "clear coating" the decals with? Will the decals take clear dope or do you have to go with the acrylic varnish?
How does this look over a dope finish?

Jim,
I have used both of these techniques (there are probably more, but this is the limit of my experience):
1) 2-3 very light sprayed coats of spray can Krylon Acrylic Crystal Clear High Gloss over the printed decal sheet. Let it dry between coats. Once dry, apply as you would any water decal, let it dry in place. I then "dust" it with 3-5 coats of butyrate dope using my air brush. I use as thick a mixture as I can get my air brush to spray without blobs. In other words, don't use much thinner. BTW, Sig Lite Coat seems to work the best.  Once you have enough dry coats, then one slightly heavier, let it dry. Then another until you get the look you want. You don't need an expensive air brush. Any one that will blow out dope and dust will work. Once I have enough dusting coats (and these are the most important part of making this work), I have used a brush over the decals.
2) Same as above but instead of the Krylon I have used straight Brodak or Sig butyrate dope, not thinned much, as my dry coats, using my air brush.

Only difference I have seen is that with the dusting coats on red colored decals, the Krylon really makes the red nice and bright. The dope tends to mute the red a bit.
Also, to make my decals, as mentioned earlier, I normally use Word doc,  Power Point, or just a jpeg picture. Save it, then print out as you would a photo using the decal paper.
Times I have had problems is when I get in a hurry and try to load up the dusting coats. These decals don't like too much dope all at once.

I've used a light mist of Lustercote clear, a couple of coats.  One time I was in a hurry and took it right from the printer to the shop, one coat of Lustercote, let it dry a couple of minutes, then right on the airplane.  Then a light coat after that.  Worked great. I got the decal paper from MICROMARK, but the link above seems to be a little cheaper.

Larry; another question  ;D I noticed on your decals you have a white. I thought printers did not print white, rather just left it blank since the paper is white. Is the decal paper white, or clear? I ordered some from you link but will have to wait until it arrives to see for myself.

I was over at Pete Ferguson's last Saturday, and he showed me his $.27 (twenty seven cents!) decals. He did the artwork on his home 'puter, put it on a mini flash drive, and took it down to Office Depot. They printed his decals on their decal paper for that price. He was going to buy a new printer. Apparently, not anymore!   D>K Steve

Brian,
From my decal paper source, you can get clear or white decal paper. Maybe this is what you are looking for.
