You can color sand dope, but you have to be careful you don't sand through or you will be reshooting the area. sort of depends on how much paint you put down. I've done it in areas that I was going to put decals on or similar.

Thanks Randy.  I put on two coats, the first was very lite and went for better coverage on the second.  I had some issues with the spray gun adjusted the fan, I have some spots that look like stripes, so my thinking was to fix the bad spots that I missed with the primer and sand it down even with 800.  My biggest concern is to not let the weight balloon.

Small repairs should not add much weight. You will be sanding off everything except what is filling the problem areas.

Oh, and should say that all of the above is moot if the paint you are sanding is pearl or metallic. You really can't sand that well.

I seem to be having a hard enough time with the basic colors so I'm not venturing into pearls or metallic's just yet .

I must admit that some of my best looking planes over the years have been ones that I got a poor finish with the color. I sanded it a lot to get it smooth and they looked bad. I added trim and panel lines to hide the worst spots and shot a very thin clear coat to lock down trim and lines. I was surprised how good it all looked. I sanded it all again and shot more clear. The finish is really in the clear.
