      Hello :

I am attempting to recover an old plane thatI buiilt in the 70's.

One wing had the Monocote peel away from the wing and the Monocote hinges became unatached. my questions are:

Can I cover over existing Monocote with a new iron on film?

Will Monocote hinges adhere to the old Monocote ?  I could slather Balsarite on the places where I want to iron on new monocote hinges.  Is this agood idea?

I could install some linen hinges with contact cement on top of the old Monocote or use Balsarite to adhere the cloth hinges.  Will this work?

I could remove all of the orginal, old, Monocote and iron on newer film but that would be a lot of work for a plane that will be used for sport flying.

I found two rolls of Silkspun Coverrite  and a large roll of Solarfilm in my basement today.  It has to be at least 35 years old.  Will it still work? The Solarfilm is the best iron on that I have ever seen!  After many decades if hanging in my attic, the planes that were covered with the Solarfilm were the ONLY ones that did not tear splt or come off of the airframes! This includes tissue, silk, and various iron ons.

      Any suggestions?

I have used old Solarfilm covering it worked well. It was stored well.  Old Monokote did not fare as well.  I would clean off the old covering and hinges. Then re hinge and re cover using new covering.  This is not going to cost a lot and will not take much time.  You will be pleased with the result.

I've tried to iron Monokote over Monokote and it made a wrinkly bubbly mess. It's much less frustrating to remove the old stuff first.

When putting Monokote over Monokote in large areas, turn the heat down.   Also it is better to use Windex window cleaner to put Monokote over Monokote and squeegee out the Windex.  When done a low temp sealing iron will do the edges.
