Windows 10 (again)
« on: July 07, 2016, 09:49:07 PM »
Scheduled to install the 'upgrade' tomorrow ((7/8), guided by a local technician, so am hoping everything doesn't go completely FUBAR.

one of the main things I found out when I converted over to 10 was to make sure and turn OFF
your Norton, Macaffee or what ever you happen to use for virus protection.

Chickened-out.  Having heard too many horror stories about '10', I cancelled today's appointment.  Will stick with '7' (Old Dogs vs. New Tricks?)  Was told, however, that '7' will be phased-out in 2020.  Will deal with that when the time comes -- if I'm even still around then.

I just know this will bring out the UBANTU and Apple fellers

I have been pretty loyal to MS since MS Basic 2.1 and on through all of the various windows OS skipping a few that we all knew sucked

I really like Win 7 a bit better than I did Win XP
Last year deliberately ordered a Toshiba and configured it for Win 7 but it came pre-loaded with 10 and I was mucho POed ...yes it is possible to revert to 7 but as a new laptop I needed to use my 3 license Win 7 disks then call for permission

All my 5 networked Win 7 CPUs got the dreaded MS Free Win 10 upgrade and constant BS to "Just Do It" and I did not

2 weeks ago EVERY box in my network self upgraded---It took me one web search to see I had 31 days to revert...which I did

BUT this got me super POed with MS...wasting my time and forcing the reload of stuff like MS Office and OUTLOOK...No real data loss cuz I am a back up OCD nut case

Bill Gates NEVER wants to sit next to me on a plane...

Well, I had Win.XP but then nobody wanted me to use IE8 anymore, so I was pretty much forced to update to Win.10. It went fine, except I hated the included browser, "Edge". Once I changed over to IE11, all was well.   D>K Steve

Mike,
I converted to W-10 about 6 months ago and like the product. It boots on my Sony Vaio more than twice as fast as W-7. When you do it make sure you do an "upgrade" rather than a new install. With the upgrade it transfers all you stuff from W-7 (like MS Office address book, settings, etc.). I had done the clean install and would have had to reinstall all the MS office stuff from scratch. I uninstalled it and did a search to fine that doing the upgrade would transfer the app stuff over. It worked fine for me. You can try it and if it doesn't work out do the uninstall it restores the prior operating system.

Best,    DennisT

It might be incumbent upon us Microsoft users to inundate Gates & Co. with our severe displeasure at their forced acceptance of their absurd 'upgrades'.  Perhaps a massive plea to retain Windows 7....which has worked remarkably well thru the years and does NOT need enhancement.

Yes, Microsoft is a multi-billion dollar entity, thus they're unlikely to heed our rants --- until we all switch to Macs or something else.

And yes, I'm an Old Fart and becoming quite cranky.  Deal with it!!!

Every Windows update in the past has been so bulky it forced me to buy a whole new computer.
That, of course, was the whole intent.
Beginning from Day One, I never met a Windows update that benefitted ME.

Maybe Microsoft has been infiltrated by Apple moles.

This discussion is a perfect example of how many people don't like or are afraid of change.  I upgraded from Windows 8 to 10 a few months ago.  It was easy and there were no problems other than the sound driver disappeared.  I just downloaded another from the net and all was good!

Forgive me for being a complete hypocrite please ... Pretty much anyone at Microsoft wouldn't want to sit next to me, or even hear from me about their wonderful organization and "bright" people.  I posted earlier that I would avoid 10 like the plague, but I am on the 'puter for hours and hours many days of the week and could see problems in the near future for some of the things I need to do daily.  So I took the plunge.

I purchased the Pro version 64-bit OEM package and did a clean install on one of the systems I recently built.  And, to be honest, I'm lovin' it.   :)

Now understand please, I realize I've given a very dishonest company permission to do all kinds of things we generally would consider unacceptable - like logging every keystroke I make, for starters.  Oh well ... nothing to hide here, and really most of what I'm doing is running very, very well.

I did earlier try the 10 home version update on one of these computers and considered it a disaster.  I literally had to reinstall drivers for almost everything in that fiasco, while the "clean" (new) install went very, very well.  Probably the best Windows install I've ever done it terms of recognizing my hardware and installing correct drivers from the get-go.  (And I've been installing Windows on PCs for about 30 years.)

I must confess however to some real peace of mind - we also have a quite new, similar system running 32-bit Windows 7 home version and will continue to run it as-is for the foreseeable future.  Kinda the best of both worlds at the moment.

 :)
Dennis

Same here,  no sound and have tried all suggestions in which some meant I had to go back to original set up.  Still no sound except on my lap top and it will not get up graded.

Dennis,
There are several articles on setting the security and privacy settings in W-10 to remove the tracking. I think there was some information on this forum but also if you do a Google search on Windows 10 privacy you will get good information. By turning off the trackers it cuts down on the popup adds.

Best,     DennisT
