What is Conus???
« on: June 05, 2012, 08:29:01 AM »
I see in the classified that everything is CONUS only. Is this something like PAYPAL? I could not find any info on here about it.
Thanks,
Mike

Means they will ship to Continental US only, no International shipments.

Slightly off topic, but you'd be amazed at how many people think Alaska isn't part of CONUS!  Just look at a map and you'll see that it is.  I can't tell you how many times I've had to fight this in my 30 year career as a purchasing agent. ???

The "C" in CONUS means "Continental".  Last I heard, Alaska is still part of the North American Continent!

But when I was stationed in Alaska, it felt like a foreign country to me!

We feel a bit foreign sometimes!

I did one buy that was $1M in hardware from an outfit in Chicago, and was specifying barge service, when their freight lady called me and asked what island Alaska was on...

If you want to exclude Alaska, you need to say "contiguous".

While processing my travel orders to Andersen AFB, Guam; (circa 1980) the "40 some," Senior Master Sergeant, at transportation asked if I had applied for a pass port. "What for" I asked? He replied "you have to have one when you go to a foreign country." I informed him about the status of Guam...he left the desk; went and had a short discussion with the young 2nd LT. at another desk; came back to me and never mentioned the word "pass port" again.  <=

Questions like this are a dead giveaway that the inquiree has never served in the U.S. military, since CONUS (all caps) has been a part of travel orders since at least the 1950s (and probably before): Continental United States.

Is PayPal a branch of the military?  ;D They do use "CONUS" a lot in the classifieds, like you said Mike, most military people know the meaning, but I can assure you, I didn't know what it meant until I put on a "pickle suit." Now that I think about it; I didn't know much of anything until I put on a pickle suit.  LL~

I imagine the policy is based on excess postage and longer shipping time to Alaska and Hawaii.

Not very many!  I only know of 3 others, but I'm sure there are more.

If you use USPS Flat Rate, it makes no difference!  Other rates are higher though.

I imagine the policy is based on excess postage and longer shipping time to Alaska and Hawaii.

I flew my first R/C model in Alaska (Naknek), in 1953.  Home-made transmitter and receiver (2 tubes).  Torp 19.  It never actually crashed, because it always came down in a deep snow bank, which cushioned the fall!
