LOL, Riley,, I am going the opposite, its been in the 30s here mostly,, though only snowed a couple times, We leave Saturday morning,, and expect to be in Tuscon Monday ( after a lay over in Vegas for the sprint cup race!) then the warm weather and flying begins!

Took me two and half days to make the drive going straight south from Seattle on I-5 to south of LA then taking a left through Needles. I think you are taking the route through Boise, Pocatello, Salt Lake and over the hills into northern Arizona. Snow most of the way.

Actually looks like going to Boise on 95, then south east a bit Twin Falls then south to Vegas for the sprint cup race on Sunday,, from there we will head to Tuscon either Sunday night or Monday morning. Most likely head south and get as far as we can Sunday night,, maybe Lake Havasue or Phoenix , get a room then make Tuscon Monday mid day.
The route home, well it will likely be the direction you described through Salt Lake, but honestly, I have not thought much about that LOL, more concerned with getting To Tuscon,, I can find my way home, eventually,,

Still not really believing I am actually going to make it this year!

Took time yesterday and called...called the leader of my pack! (Our Gifted Leader and HEAD MASTA' of the GIALDINI SCHOOL OF STUNT
REALLY HEARTFELT.. What great memories and stories we shared about those years of the early 60 through late 70's. Both he and his wife would have loved to take a WISC. winter SNOW BIRD trip to VSC. however they have some serious health issues that need to be attended to at this time.

Randy and Mark...
He mentioned it would be great to be a part of the gaggle of observers..watching you both FLY FOR THE PRIZE in CLASSIC. However most of all...it would be wonderful just to see and talk with so many of his old friends and peers and wishes everyone have a safe trip and enjoy a great time together.

Starting out Sunday morning. Probably a 7 or 8 hour drive, depending on stops. Flappy Jack's for breakfast or the Diner of Death in Yuma. Maybe hit Cabela's in Phoenix for a hunter-killer fix if I go the northern route. I need to look at the weather, been through one sandstorm at great expense near Palm Springs years ago. Totaled out the finish on my car AND my race car, including the glass, headlights et.al. Flip a coin.

Andy Borgogna and his charming wife, Jackie are coming in on Monday. We all plan to BBQ on the hotel's gas BBQ one evening. If they have it, we should use it! Shades of the Meat and Meet up in Woodland. DANG, those were good steaks!

Let's set a date and make it a party. Cheaper than restaurants!

Saturday, March 10, 8:00 AM, about 60 degrees. Looks like a nice morning for practice. Best day for the last 5. Reeves, Brickhous and Peterson here about ready to go to the field. It is about 5 miles away and we have one stop sign and one stop light to get there from here.

   Just got here 2 hours ago and am staying at a timeshare in Oro Valley (Rancho Vistoso).
Drove from San Diego all day today. We spent yesterday in LegoLand with our grandson.

   The paint's probably dry on my planes by now.....

   After the VSC we're heading for Albuquerque and looping through Colorado Springs
before picking up the RV I bought in Reno on the way home (stopping in Rogue River for acouple of days).
Looks lik about 3600 mi round trip.

Our friend REX gleaned a Prius for their trip....MIGHT HELP A TAD...Gas here in Gig Harbor averages around $4.059...Put 37 dollars reg in my pickup which brought up the gas gage to just under half a tank. OUCH!

Donaldo, I posted on another thread about VSC. Didn't get out Monday like I wanted. But, Aunt Betty may not be around too many more years. Got to see most of the people today and hopefully will catch up with the rest before the week is out. Mark and Randy's planes look great. Mark had his daughter hid some where as I guess he heard about this old man. Marvin, will be going North thru Hutcheson and Newton. Have to be back to work Tuesday AM. More later guys and Leo, Sandy & Prissy have a new doggy sitter in the name of Robbie McDonald hisself. Can't thank him enough.

Ok I confess, I spent the morning over on the north fourty ,, flyin and trimmin the Avenger, shakin of the rust Tomorrow I need to gget over and see the rest of the world, LOL,, But on a good note, I got in 5 flights, the 15% NITRO fuel is really makin it better. I am using the same fuel load and prop as I use in the NW on 10%.
Tomorrow I work on getting bottoms below 20 feet,then shine and polish for appearance judging. Randys plane is nice, It is a bit more classic "authentic" than mine, paint scheme wise. It presents really well,, but then I have never seen my Avenger in the air so I cannot really judge,,

I did get caught by surprise on my last flight,, I had a thermal/wind gust blow through during my insides and MAN I almost peed my pants,, it wound up SO FAST I barely kept up with it,,,

I have to hand to to Jim Lee for building the Dmeco Wildcat. I have the kit and when I looked at it I decided that it would not be a good stunter. I am sure that Jim got it to perform though. He is master at that.

I see that there are two Bob Palmer Go Devils pictured.
Notice one has full span flaps and one has wider cord, half span flaps.

I looked at a set of Go Devil Plans last night, and I see that the original plans show half span flaps.

How is the full span version gonna get dingged if it was not built as original?
I mean, why not include a thicker wing, blunt leading edge (heck why not a swept leading edge) longer tail moment and bigger stab/ Elevator?
and while were at it let puts that piped VF 40 on it.

I guess my question is, how much leeway is given at a big event like this.

That one with the full-span flaps is a Go Devil JUNIOR. Does anyone know if the JUNIOR had half-span flaps?

Hi Mike,

Here's what I found:

Bob Palmer's GO-DEVIL JR. was just a miniature of his famous GO-DEVIL (Sr). It, too, was one of the very first to install flaps in the trailing edge of the wing. Remember, this was back about 1948. Bob also claimed to be able to do the entire stunt pattern of that early day with nothing more than an Ohlsson & Rice .23 engine. When everyone else was trying to go up to Ohlsson and Super Cyke 60s, he was staying down with less power and succeeding.
The model has a 40 inch wing span and 312 square inches of area. It called for engines from .23 up to .49. A good .19 or .20 would do fine today.

The picture on the box top shows 1/2 span (or less) flaps.

Watt Moore had a Go Devil Jr at the Huntersfield a few months ago and he said it was legal OTS with full flaps. Maybe he knows something we don't.

That's the one in question. No problem with the entry, which flew successfully. It's just that we may want to include it with those being considered for the "Spirit of 52" award....but only if Watt can document the full flaps thing.

Final answer: According to a very knowledgable and reliable source I spoke with tonight, the Go-Devil JUNIOR plan showed the option of half-or-full-span flaps.
