Left home yesterday(3/7). Ran into high winds and dust storms in West Texas and Eastern New Mexico.
Still very windy and dust in air when we stopped at our cabin in mountains (Ruidoso, NM) for a couple of
days. What a surprise when we woke up this morning with everything covered with snow and it is still
snowing.... Beautiful..... From 80 degrees to below freezing and on to Tucson if we can get out of here
(no 4 wheel drive) RW
-
LOL, Riley,, I am going the opposite, its been in the 30s here mostly,, though only snowed a couple times, We leave Saturday morning,, and expect to be in Tuscon Monday ( after a lay over in Vegas for the sprint cup race!) then the warm weather and flying begins!
-
Shame you can't hop a plane, Don.
-
Mark,
Took me two and half days to make the drive going straight south from Seattle on I-5 to south of LA then taking a left through Needles. I think you are taking the route through Boise, Pocatello, Salt Lake and over the hills into northern Arizona. Snow most of the way.
Be careful.
-
Just had lunch with Allen Brickhaus and Charlie Reeves in Little Rock. They are on the way and in terrible weather. Keep our friends in your thoughts and prayers as they travel.
-
Actually looks like going to Boise on 95, then south east a bit Twin Falls then south to Vegas for the sprint cup race on Sunday,, from there we will head to Tuscon either Sunday night or Monday morning. Most likely head south and get as far as we can Sunday night,, maybe Lake Havasue or Phoenix , get a room then make Tuscon Monday mid day.
The route home, well it will likely be the direction you described through Salt Lake, but honestly, I have not thought much about that LOL, more concerned with getting To Tuscon,, I can find my way home, eventually,,
Still not really believing I am actually going to make it this year!
Shultzie,, hop a plane man, you would love it and you know it,,

Took time yesterday and called...called the leader of my pack! (Our Gifted Leader and HEAD MASTA' of the GIALDINI SCHOOL OF STUNT
REALLY HEARTFELT.. What great memories and stories we shared about those years of the early 60 through late 70's. Both he and his wife would have loved to take a WISC. winter SNOW BIRD trip to VSC. however they have some serious health issues that need to be attended to at this time.
Randy and Mark...
He mentioned it would be great to be a part of the gaggle of observers..watching you both FLY FOR THE PRIZE in CLASSIC. However most of all...it would be wonderful just to see and talk with so many of his old friends and peers and wishes everyone have a safe trip and enjoy a great time together.
attached is photo (compliments to Les McD) of one man and his stunt machine that jump started my life long addiction and love for CLPA.

Who mentioned snow???? Leaving Saturday AM with stop at Tucumcari. Hopefully Tuscon Sunday evening. Then some time Monday to the field. Will be trying for rental car for me. The family will have the van. H^^
-
Starting out Sunday morning. Probably a 7 or 8 hour drive, depending on stops. Flappy Jack's for breakfast or the Diner of Death in Yuma. Maybe hit Cabela's in Phoenix for a hunter-killer fix if I go the northern route. I need to look at the weather, been through one sandstorm at great expense near Palm Springs years ago. Totaled out the finish on my car AND my race car, including the glass, headlights et.al. Flip a coin.
Andy Borgogna and his charming wife, Jackie are coming in on Monday. We all plan to BBQ on the hotel's gas BBQ one evening. If they have it, we should use it! Shades of the Meat and Meet up in Woodland. DANG, those were good steaks!
Let's set a date and make it a party. Cheaper than restaurants! ~>
-
Yeah I'll pack up the small cooler and stop to get some breakfast Jacks. Long 17 miles to the field!! Dan
-
well let the oddesy begin!!
leaving Pullman,, see ya all there,,

Saturday, March 10, 8:00 AM, about 60 degrees. Looks like a nice morning for practice. Best day for the last 5. Reeves, Brickhous and Peterson here about ready to go to the field. It is about 5 miles away and we have one stop sign and one stop light to get there from here.

It has been a cold spell here during the week but will be better. Rechecked forcast and all looks very good. Have a good trip and be safe. H^^

Randy,
I guess you gave up on "leave thedriving to us..."
Just got here 2 hours ago and am staying at a timeshare in Oro Valley (Rancho Vistoso).
Drove from San Diego all day today. We spent yesterday in LegoLand with our grandson.
The paint's probably dry on my planes by now.....
After the VSC we're heading for Albuquerque and looping through Colorado Springs
before picking up the RV I bought in Reno on the way home (stopping in Rogue River for acouple of days).
Looks lik about 3600 mi round trip.

Well, there won't be any pictures from me. I can't believe I left the darned camera sitting on the kitchen table. Ugh! Oh well, the sister-in-law brought one.
-
Hey Randy, you've been under enough stress just getting the ship cared for in time, let others take the pictures and you can get copies from them!
Allen Goff called me today, he and Roger Wildman got there yesterday. Look them up, they'll be glad to meet you.

Did anyone here have to morgage your house to buy gasoline for the trip to VSC?..... HB~> .......Just wondering.. LL~ .... D>K H^^

Our friend REX gleaned a Prius for their trip....MIGHT HELP A TAD...Gas here in Gig Harbor averages around $4.059...Put 37 dollars reg in my pickup which brought up the gas gage to just under half a tank. OUCH!
-
I just put the gas in the pickup, I left the numbers to Jessica to log into the trip log,, once I get home I may or may not look at how much gas cost me,,
-
If I had Shultzies' money I'ld fly out there tonight!!
-
Les,
Maybe he can pay your way!
I was hoping to see you this coming weekend.
-
If I had Shultzies' money I'ld fly out there tonight!!
Wish I had all the $$$$ over the years I spent on the amount of cans that I threw in trash dumpsters..(humm? now that I mention it...wish I had the money that was spent on all model airplanes that I gleaned out of years of DUMPSTER DIVING at all our flying sites here in the NW?
-
I spent most of Monday adjusting the engine and fuel quantity for altitude. Fuel efficiency is way up...
Attached are the first few pix :

Randy...and NW Snowbirds...
U missed out today's snow storm...Took this photo a few minutes ago....It snowed really hard about an hour ago....2 inches...but it is now melting really fast.
Accident just across the Narrows bridge for about 20 minutes...
-
Donaldo, I posted on another thread about VSC. Didn't get out Monday like I wanted. But, Aunt Betty may not be around too many more years. Got to see most of the people today and hopefully will catch up with the rest before the week is out. Mark and Randy's planes look great. Mark had his daughter hid some where as I guess he heard about this old man. Marvin, will be going North thru Hutcheson and Newton. Have to be back to work Tuesday AM. More later guys and Leo, Sandy & Prissy have a new doggy sitter in the name of Robbie McDonald hisself. Can't thank him enough. H^^
-
Thanks Doc!
Still snowing this eve....below freezing in the morning around 30 degrees...and 3 to 4 inches due in later tonight or early morning. YUKKKO!! Ready for summa time BIG TIME!
U LUCKY VSC GRUNTS! ARE WE ENVUS...ELL YES! LL~ LL~

Nice Pizza party at Ricki Hyatt's house, again..
The plane on the high ceiling shelf my Mars at the timeshare we're staying at.
-
Don,
Some of these old dudes are still sparkinng along; a few action shots in this group.
Be sure to check out the Joe Dill airplane (with retracts).
Rex
-
Thanks REX!
Joe and I were always blown away by Harold's retract model...and I too really thought this wing was awesome. Truly unique. Thanks for sharing those photos...
-
Ok I confess, I spent the morning over on the north fourty ,, flyin and trimmin the Avenger, shakin of the rust Tomorrow I need to gget over and see the rest of the world, LOL,, But on a good note, I got in 5 flights, the 15% NITRO fuel is really makin it better. I am using the same fuel load and prop as I use in the NW on 10%.
Tomorrow I work on getting bottoms below 20 feet, then shine and polish for appearance judging. Randys plane is nice, It is a bit more classic "authentic" than mine, paint scheme wise. It presents really well,, but then I have never seen my Avenger in the air so I cannot really judge,,
-
Oh and Shultzie,, it was pretty horrible today,, I am not sure it ever even got above 83 or 84 degrees,,,
I did get caught by surprise on my last flight,, I had a thermal/wind gust blow through during my insides and MAN I almost peed my pants,, it wound up SO FAST I barely kept up with it,,,
-
Thanks for the pictures guys.
Who belongs to the Frisky Pete in Army colors?
I have to hand to to Jim Lee for building the Dmeco Wildcat. I have the kit and when I looked at it I decided that it would not be a good stunter. I am sure that Jim got it to perform though. He is master at that.

LOL! RUBBBA DUBBIT' IN MARK! During times like that...wouldn't it be great to have n' on board a POPable' drag shoot or fuselage drag plates.
Or in Randy's case...with his new Avenger's "FLAME OUT"...HE NEEDED A "DEPLOYABLE" ON BOARD BALLON AIR BAG SYSTEM LL~ LL~

I see that there are two Bob Palmer Go Devils pictured.
Notice one has full span flaps and one has wider cord, half span flaps.
I looked at a set of Go Devil Plans last night, and I see that the original plans show half span flaps.
How is the full span version gonna get dingged if it was not built as original?
I mean, why not include a thicker wing, blunt leading edge (heck why not a swept leading edge) longer tail moment and bigger stab/ Elevator?
and while were at it let puts that piped VF 40 on it.
I guess my question is, how much leeway is given at a big event like this.
Larry, Buttafucco Stunt Team
-
That one with the full-span flaps is a Go Devil JUNIOR. Does anyone know if the JUNIOR had half-span flaps?
(Kind of like to know that in a hurry, please...)
-
Hi Mike,
Here's what I found:
Bob Palmer's GO-DEVIL JR. was just a miniature of his famous GO-DEVIL (Sr). It, too, was one of the very first to install flaps in the trailing edge of the wing. Remember, this was back about 1948. Bob also claimed to be able to do the entire stunt pattern of that early day with nothing more than an Ohlsson & Rice .23 engine. When everyone else was trying to go up to Ohlsson and Super Cyke 60s, he was staying down with less power and succeeding.
The model has a 40 inch wing span and 312 square inches of area. It called for engines from .23 up to .49. A good .19 or .20 would do fine today.
The picture on the box top shows 1/2 span (or less) flaps.

Many thanks, Wes! (See your e-mail.)
-
Watt Moore had a Go Devil Jr at the Huntersfield a few months ago and he said it was legal OTS with full flaps. Maybe he knows something we don't.
Ed
-
That's the one in question. No problem with the entry, which flew successfully. It's just that we may want to include it with those being considered for the "Spirit of 52" award....but only if Watt can document the full flaps thing.
-
Final answer: According to a very knowledgable and reliable source I spoke with tonight, the Go-Devil JUNIOR plan showed the option of half-or-full-span flaps.
-
Ok, time for more pictures. ;D
-
Today was the last day of OTS and the "big guns" showed of their beautiful creations for pretty points - WOW.
-
A few more Fly-By's and some shots of the judged planes.
-
Whoah, the one in the "Tony" paint scheme, isn't that a Novi or something? Now that's something different! ;D
Thanks for the great pics, please keep 'em coming! y1

That is a USA 1 by Gordan Delaney. Also, that is Gordan's Bellanca in the next picture with him holding it.
-
Gordons Bellanca is a sweet peice too, you have to see the cockpit detail, complete with a stunt news featuring him on the cover,, its a really cool peice,
Lots of really nice airplanes,, LOTS,,
when appearance judging was taking place, it struck me the amount of love and passion exhibited there was just amazing. Think about the number of hours invested in 70 or 80 of the prettiest stunt ships you have seen, all sitting together,, Its a pretty powefull statement to the passion in this hobby,, It was humbling and flattering to see my plane sitting among all those
-
Every time I see a collection of magnificent airplanes I thank God for the POSITIVE affect that BOM and Appearance judging has had. Stunt events, unlike almost all other events have bred modelers who are truly proud of what they create and fly.
I couldn't imagine the Nats or VSC without seeing these beautiful creations in one area at the same time.
Can't wait to get there tommorrow morning.
-
AMEN TOM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! y1

Is that a Charles Parott Ryan ST? Who's? That is one of my all-time favorites...
-
Is that a Charles Parott Ryan ST? Who's? That is one of my all-time favorites...
Yep. Belongs to Mark Gerber, Ft. Collins, CO.

Yeah he got his going pretty well. It doesnt float its way down when the engine quits, but it looks great.
-
Jim wisely omits the Vertical 8s (tells the judges in advance, of course), but does everything else in the O.T. pattern....on 70-ft. lines at a rapid clip. As always with Jim, a very entertaining display.
-
Mike
To be exact, the Super Wildcat (FM-1) is flown on .012 x 60 ft solid lines... At 24 oz, I don't know if it could handle 70 ft!
And 4 sec lap times aren't fast, are they...? The second flight was 4.2 lap time and the motor was still four cycling a bit!
Very stable and 'fun' to fly ~^ The landings ain't so good ~^
Thanks
Jim ;D
-
Whoops, sorry 'bout the line length. Gotta' hand it to you, though: very, very entertaining (as always!).
We can always depend on Jim Lee to show up here with something unusual. Remember his Aeronca C-3? Who else would do that? And he made it work.
Thing is, his IGNITION entry (Go-Devil Sr.) is dead-on serious!
(Jim & Lila are two of my favorite people....in case you couldn't tell.)
-
Army Sgt. Sean McEntee
Coming to an Army Instalation near you, Tom! Ill be back at Ft Hood again this summer. Looking forward to flying with you guys again!!
-
Sean,
See you in the morning. Looking forward to getting there.
Glad that you will also be in Texas shortly.
-
That is a USA 1 by Gordan Delaney. Also, that is Gordan's Bellanca in the next picture with him holding it.
Thanks for the correction Keith. That paint on that model is definitely some "outside-of-the-box" thinking. Kudos to Gordon for going for it and pulling it off nicely.
I've seen good photos of his Bellanca before, awesome model. y1
Wish I was there! HB~>

I crashed my Strathmoor today (inverted) in practice over the grass after the second official.....
There is some benefit to making the tailfeathers of 1/8 light ply laminated with 3/32 balsa and
covered with 8mm silk. Wing is undamaged where Bob McDonald signed it...
Inboard landing gear attachment as well as arrowshaft ttachment need repair; I fly the Mars
as a substitute plane tomorrow if ayone flys, since I'm first up.......
Randy was visibally disappointed with the apperance points garnered by his new creation.
Maybe the problem was that he set it down next to Marks golden bird...
-
Thanks Rex. Great pictures.
-
Well Randy, think of it this way, now you've got 360 plus days to get the Avenger ready for next year! ;D
Sounds like Mark had a pucker moment of his own today too!
-
I seem to be loosing energy today as we pack to leave for Kirkland, AZ, Aluuquerque, Colerado Springs, Reno, Rogue River, OR & home.
A few more intersting planes an fly-by's :
Rex
-
Saturday was blown out by the wind, some folks skipping to the end to avoid problems with the effects of gravity.
I heard a few "touch and goes", but no major losses that I know about...
My wife refused to make me a "WING QUILT"...
We stopped by the airplane Museum near Davis Monthon AFB and looked at a few
planes; I wonder why nobody makes canards.....after all, I like to be different....
(we know rhe Wrights were "eron" about canards..or were they )
-
Great pix, Rex
-
Well, since everyone is driving home (Mark is probably somewhere in Utah right now along with Pete Peterson). Mark needs a bigger fuel tank. Engine quit in the first loop of the clover last two official flights. I told him less nitro or bigger tank. Maybe some white gas. Although at home it will probably be big enough. Beautiful plane, though.
-
Randy, fooled you,, I am home now,, we got home about 1:30,,(drove pretty much straight through, I missed LInda H^^), I talked to Pete yesterday, they were headed to Salt Lake to visit family,, the road was closed so they headed west to I-5,,
-
Glad you're home Mark. I was a little concerned about you and Pete after seeing the weather report. Get some sleep, dude.
-
Well guys/gals, the old DOC went the other direction. Decided to go to Los Cruces instead of Deming to Hatch and then North. High winds and dust. As we got to Los Cruces they were shutting the highway down. Stopped at White Sands, but could not se much with the dust in the air. Grandaughter was upset we didn't go into the desert, but I wanted to get to Tucumcari before the snow. Had sleet/rain at Texas Canyon on rest room stop. Monday was uneventful until trailer came loose just before we got to Fowler KS. Lucky the store was still open do I didn't have to back track for new 2 inch ball. Then it was rain from about Newton KS on home. I am completely wore out. Guess it must be old age as my arms and chest muscles are still aching. I hope every one made it home from VSC okay as I am glad to be back home. H^^
PS:Had my way Tuscon would be home.jeh
