VSC Blues
« on: March 16, 2010, 10:53:53 PM »
We got blown out today.  No competition.  Great dinner at El Corral, though!  You don't need no stinkin' airplanes to have fun at VSC.  Chatted with Bob Gialdini after dinner at the motel, drove by the NO-TEL MOTEL just to prove to Andy Borgogna's wife, Jackie, that it really exists.  Met the usual list of suspects at the field, bought some stuff, sold some stuff.

Bill Heyworth sponsored a great BBQ at the field yesterday.  What a guy!  Elaine ain't bad in the hug department.
Think S.M.A.L.L. y'all and, it's all good, CL, FF and RC!

Bad flying weather at VSC always means more socializing. I just wish that I was there.

Please say say hello to Bob Gialdini for me.

Day Two looks like "Deja Vu all over again" --- at least from where I sit (which is in my apartment, six miles east of the flying site).  I'm sick, thus missing the whole show so far.  Currently looking at gusty winds bending the trees on this side of town.  If it's the same at the field, this doesn't look good.

We'll probably be hearing from others later today...

It's all my fault!
Sorry but I'm coming anyway so check your lines and hold the handle a bit tighter.
Bad weather just follows me to these things and Part #6 of "The Stiletto Chronicles" will explain more about this!
Uncle Mikey needs to start feeling better since he's the one that's been badgering me for the past 20 years or so to attend a VSC.
Blame him.
Wind velocity will only increase the closer I get to Tucson. It's a me and nature thing.
Sorry, but I'm like a moth heading for the light.

Hi, Ian.  Yes, we hope to see you and Shaheen next year.

Despite the high winds, this one (so far) isn't the worst.  The 10th Annual was worse.  Freezing rain and high wind all week.  There is some hope for tomorrow, Friday and Saturday.

Can't really complain.  Most years, the weather has been ideal.

That we do, but I only live 115 miles from the field. If I drove my 1985 911, 13.5k actual miles, I once made the trip in 43mins, young & stupid doesn't even begin to cover it.

Heck, that's about average from here....and I'm only 6.5 miles away from the field.  (But then until you've experienced Tucson's cross-town traffic and freight train crossings, you haven't lived.)

That's certain. I bounced my Cobra 15 feet into my first flight. Broke it and burned my hand when I went to pick it up. So no airplane but I'm having fun anyway. The windiest day at VSC is better than the best day working.

Hi Les!
It hasn't been that way forever. ;)

For I rode my racing bicycle every day from Amsterdam to Utrecht and back to visit the World Championships 1976.
The weather: A light breeze and -for Dutch circumstances- scorching hot. Drank two bottles of water each way.

And you were there.... as everybody noticed in the end. y1

I vowed that it would be my last time as a visitor. I was on the Dutch team in 1978.... ;D
Great to be shaking hands again in 2004 H^^

Well I am back at Aunt Betty's after a day at circle one with the P-39.  Yesterday the Firecat quit in outside loops so I was done for the day.  Only one chance at top ten each circle.  Don't know results.  Uncle Mikey what ever you got you need to bundle up and get out here.

Yesterday Ray Firkins was showing off his version fo the Gialdini Stingray in bare bones waiting for finish.  Seen Bob G. taking pictures and pointing.  Hate to see such great workmanship covered up by some paint.  With circle one being isolated from the rest don't know much else.  Get circle 2 Friday and circle 3 Saturday if I don't splatter this over weight bird.  Lost two ounces between Kansas and Arizona.  62 ounces made for a light pull for the LA .46.   y1 #^ #^ #^ #^ #^ LL~ D>K H^^Your choisce as I am having lots and lots of fun.

Nope, just the tail of the Cobra (and a control system that will need some work).

Shultzie,

You should see the twin that Bart if flying. Wow. He's leading at the end of the first day of classic.

Well I got my flight in yesterday with the Humongous, I was the second to last to fly on my circle in the first round.  Needless to say I didn't make the top ten cut.  But I did fly and did survive the wind and got the plane down in one piece.  So I was happy.  Today was another story, I have no one to blame but myself for not getting my stuff ready in time for VSC.  My engine flamed out early in the flight, lucky the plane was in level flight when it happened.  The good news is we have one throw away flight in Classic so that will be my throw away.  I plan to change planes tomorrow and fly the Humongous in Classic, the corners will suck but at least I can count on it to complete the pattern.  As I have said for four years in a row, wait till next year.

The good news is VSC is a lot more fun with my wife here to keep me company.  And yes as Larry pointed out, there really is a hotel in Tucson call the "No-Tell-Motel".

The people here at VSC make this worth the trek every year.  Had a long chat with Gorden Delaney about his Classic legal Heinz-57 and how it got it's name.  Bob Hunt and I renewed our annual discussion on motorcycles, ya that's the ticket "Discussion".  Joe Gilbert and his wife Colleen are so much fun, Joe flew the judges flight on Wednesday in the wind, so we all had to fly.  And as always Doc Holiday and his dog are great fun to be around, it just would  not be VSC without Doc.

Anyway tomorrow is another day.

It is great to see people that only see maybe once or twice a year.  Also meeting new ones.  Andy B. has a looker, she even helped me during practice day.  And to see Randy P. again, hope he isn't coming up with excuseitis like some people I read about.   LL~ LL~ LL~  My coach the demented poodle let me know about my pattern yesterday and she is wondering why I scored so low today with a great flight. n~ n~Tried to explain to her some judges see things different than others. I was judging that flight, Andy - no problem, the glow plug held the cylinder head off of the asphalt just long enough.  The grinding sound made by the plug while the airplane was coming to a halt on the asphalt was pretty impressive.
