U.S. TEAM TRIALS AT AMA
« on: August 29, 2007, 07:45:45 PM »
WENSDAY AND THEY ARE STARTING TO ARIVE AT THE L-PAD. ALL FOUR CIRCLES WERE IN USE. WINDY FROM THE EAST, WALKER FROM THE WEST, RICH FROM THE SOUTH, AND MCDONALD FROM THE NORTH. PLUS HUNT, POWELL, SMITH, TYSOR, SCOTT, MCMILLAN, HEMSTROUGHT, HERNANDEZ, AND I KNOW I'VE MISSED SOME ONE (S). THE WEATHER FORECAST LOOKS GREAT FOR THE TRIALS.

I CAN NOT REPORT ON THE TEAM TRIALS BECAUSE I'LL BE JUDGING AND WILL NOT HAVE ACCESS TO THE SCORES. HOPE SOMEONE WILL PICK UP THE BALL AND KEEP EVERYONE INFORMED.

BLESSINGS
ALLEN

Some stuff...
Jose's aeroplane didn't arrive, so he flew the Testarosa, while Winfred flew the Spitfire....neither made the cut.
Hunt, Fitzgerald, Neumann, Walker, Josia Delgado, Orestes Hernandez, Brett Buck, Rush, Bill Rich, Frank McMillan all made the cut....

Strange that on the other site(SSW) there is a picture of Orestes holding his airplane.  They also show he is leading the pack for the first day.  Today is a whole new picture as I understand that the top ten start from scratch today.  Have fun,  DOC Holliday

Can someone explain a little about the scoring at the team trials? I see some of the scores and they're in the thousands. Do they add the scores together from all of your flights?

P.S. How many official flight does a pilot get?

Steve: The Team Trials uses FAI scoring, since they are qualifying to fly at the World Championships where FAI scoirng is used. FAI scoring uses a 1 - 10 scale for maneuver scoring, with a K-factor assigned to each maneuver based on it's difficulty.   Steve M.

FYI   ORESTES IS NOT THE "ARF" GUY, HIS IS A UNITED STATES TEAM MEMBER.
From this FAI judge, everyone of the ten or should I say twelve, gave a great account of themself's today. Way to go Dave, Paul, Orestes, and T Ferrell our junior.

Blessings

Orestes is known as "The Machine".

I have a feeling that he is just getting started.  From the looks of things he got a personal trainer or something and has really gotten into shape.  This (along with talent) means WATCH OUT!!!!

You can get access to the FAI rules at

http://www.fai.org/aeromodelling/documents/sc4

You also asked about other details used regarding the scoring at our Team Trials.  As has been explained, the FAI scoring system is based on judging each maneuver from 0 to 10, and then there is a K Factor applied based (at least in some opinions) on the difficulty of each maneuver.  Generally, with experienced and critical judging, a good score in the FAI system is in the  range of 1,000 points.  A really good score would be in excess of 1,100 points.  (I could determine what a "perfect" score would be, but do not have the material  immediately available, but it is in the range of 1,300 to 1,400 points.)  Our Team Trials are run in a similar manner as the World Championships.  We have two qualifying circles, each with a set of 3 judges.  Each pilot performs two flights on each of the two circles and qualifiers are determined based on the total of the best of the two flights from each circle.  Hence, you see a two flight total after the qualifying rounds of around 2,000 points, plus or minus.  At our Team Trials, 10 of the 21 entries at this Team Trials were taken to the Finals round based on that two flight total for each competitor.  (At the World Championships where as many as 90 fliers are entered, there are 15 finalists per the specific FAI rules.)

The finals round then becomes a new contest as the qualifying flight scores are discarded, each pilot has three official flights in front of six judges.  There are two attempts allowed for each of the three official flights.  Finals scores and rankings are based on the best two of those three official flights.  This year, high and low judge's scores are retained in establishing the average score for each individual flight.  Thus, the finalist's scores will be in the range in excess of 2,000 points, and in the case of our current Team Members and the first alternates, their two flight total scores were in excess of 2,300 points.
