We've had a few early arrivals Friday and they put up a few flights today.

Looking good. See you tomorrow. What focal length lens were the pictures taken with? They are excellent pictures. I took 6,500 pictures in the last year and I never got any that were better than yours.

Not sure on the focal length. the camera has a 12-1 zoom which I think equates to around 400 mm. I was probably using somewhere between 1/3 to 1/2 of what was available on these shots.

Elwyn and I had a ball today taking pictures. I think the picture of the balloon as it broke is great. There is always that split second before a balloon (or a plane) bites the dust.

Bill and Joe are very good. However I didn't get a chance to see how I compared. I crashed on the first loop. Ran out of air and and handle. Pancaked into the ground. Bill Wilson crashed on his second flight however he got 2nd. The wind was horrendous! I thought the jet was savable but I think its too much trouble. I will pirate all the hardware.

Foot note.. I made it home in 5.5 hrs. avarage speed 74 mph

I take it I missed a good one. Spent Saturday sanding on a plane and Sunday was Church activities. Wish I could have been there tho. Have fun, DOC Holliday

DE and the Gluedobbers ran a great contest. IMHO the wind sucked, but made things quite interesting. It ate some nice planes. Speaking of eating...the hospitality and food was great.

There were several planes that fell prey to the "prop-eating gophers" due to missed needle settings (and the pilots still trying to push through the breeze) and gusts of winds from "unexpected" directions.
All in all, I thought it was a pretty good contest and the hosts VERY great. The Glue-dobbers put on a great contest.

A simply superb contest. Thanks to the Gluedobbers that made it so great, and others from near and far. The wind today was challenging to say the least. I watched several flights before my own, and saw a lot of slack lines in some of the overhead and verticle manuevers. The neat thing was that as each pilot landed and were taking their plane off of the circle, they were grinning ear to ear that they had made it through the flight without loosing their plane. A GREAT BIG THANKYOU to all who made this one of my most memerable contests.

No crashes in the Advanced circle

Of course we decided as a group to scratch our second flights, I was real lucky drawing the #1 flight, almost wasn't fair as I had the best air of all.

Thanks for the good contest Dee and the TGD crew. It was better to loose the jet rather than the T-Bolt. No big loss. I will just have to get to work on the SV-100 for a back up at Huntersville.

I am not familiar with the planes involved or the judges that made the decision, however here is my take on it.

I have seen the same thing happen in other fields totally unrelated to model airplanes. When a person such as Sparky reaches the very top level of craftsmanship there is only a few others there. These people are what I call world class. If in any contest it comes down to the point that there is more than one world class model there is no way to say objectively that one is better than the other. It then becomes subjective. Which type of model do you like the best? Which color do you like the best? Which builder do you like the best?

This is because the judges are human. I do not think any of us would be any different.

I got 75.5 points for 2 maneuvers however it should have been 80.5. Doesn't matter they forgot the 10 points for the attempt on the loops.. LOL

. I could have gotten 600 and it wouldn't have mattered, Boo Hoo I lost my plane..

To me Sparky's plane is a 20 pointer, but, there were others there also that could have made it to. Talking to Howard he was a little embarrassed that he wound up on top with 19 points. I can still remember the year that Windy only 19.5 points for his front row airplane. He confronted the judge and was told in no uncertain terms that it was only a 19.5 point airplane. I am glad I am not an appearance judge as there is so many planes that ore out of this world. Talking to a previous appearance judge about what they look for is something that will really open your eyes. It is not all the glitter and details that is put on a surface. Sometimes it is the simple paint scheme on a fantastic structure. Look your plane over sometime or have someone else look at it up close. I find little pin holes and bumps in the filets. Also a graphic that does not match an opposing graphic. There are so many details. Sparky will get there if he stays with it. Have fun, DOC Holliday

Great Contest!! 'Twas a 'bit' breezy, but summer in the midwest can be that way!

A great last contest at that field. We are looking forward to flying in Bob's Front Yard next year... I remember flying in 'Preacher Bob's' yard for several years...

The models are handled with care, but each and every detail is looked at during appearance points during the Nats. When it comes to the top twenty some models, even the smallest detail is not overlooked. No one this year had a perfect model and the top dog received 19 points. Charlie and Jim are excellent builders and finishers and know what they are doing. How many times have you seen a NASCAR race won or lost by less than a second of time.

Many excellent models have, when viewed closeup, panel lines that do not touch, panel lines that overlap the intersecting line, overspray which is still apparent, glaring exposed nuts and bolts, a loose pilot in the canopy area, not clean in hinge lines, hinges not colored the same or not alike, and other items that have to be judged to separate the best from the best.

Jim and Charlie work hard at this. Those who would like to do the job, please step in line and call Warren Tiahrt.

This is a sore subject to me. People make mistakes sometimes over and over. Was my plane the best there? No. was my plane better than some? Most definitely. I gave it my best shot and didn't make it to the Front row. I won't try again. I'll just build as I normally do and take what I get. What more could I expect??

Sorry Alan, but, Warren is not the event director for 2008 NATS. You were there when Paul made the announcement. Catdaddy, when was the last time you were at a NATS? Sorry Bill, I had to ask. I plan on being at Brodaks one of these years. Comparing the NATS to Brodaks is like comparing either one to VSC, the Northwest Regionals or any of the other major contests around this great country of ours. Sounds like it was a great contest, wish I could have been there. Instead, I traveled to Biloxi, MS for my mother's 75th birthday. She has less birthdays ahead than she has behind, so I plan to make all of the ones she has left. My birthday is just a week after hers so we always celebrate them together. I thought it was odd that she asked for Randy Smiths phone number about three months ago. Well she surprised me with a brand new PA 40 UL. I LOVE MY MOMMA!!!
