Systrema 2019
« on: June 02, 2019, 04:44:46 PM »
Jim "Uncle Jimby" Aron has done it again. Today were the first flights of his new Systrema - 20% more wing area and ~ the same weight as the last one. And another potential 20 point finish. Behold:

Workmanship is, as expected, of the highest order. Unless it gets run over by a tank, it will be in the front row for certain. It has some innovative tricks to hide the arming plug, which may require some modification to be practical, but very cool.

The base color is a sort of low-saturation Orange, like Papaya Orange (used on McLaren race cars) but it pops much better than it shows here, in these foggy-morning pictures.

But the best thing about is that it flies much better than the smaller version, pretty much right from the first flight. A minor tweak, some handle adjustment, and a touch of nose weight and he was flying it at least as well as he flew the other one on the third flight.

All in all, a a very successful first flying session!

As good as it looks here, it's actually much better, because some idiot with close to 50 years of photographic experience including professional paid work, couldn't manage to check his exposure compensation settings from the last session, and underexposed them all by 3 stops! It was "fixed" in Nikon View in the raw file, but, turned the ultra-high-res 24 MP camera into a Pocket Instamatic.  I hate that guy.

The light was poor, too, since we were more concerned about getting it flying than creating artistic masterpieces, with predictable results...

I think, as a helpful guy, you should suggest that. If you come towards him with a Zona saw in your hand, he will understand your level of concern.

Looks great! If Howard does turn the canopy around, I don't think it would be very noticeable.

On the other hand, Howard's misshapen & lumpy lumpy molded balsa canopy should be cause for concern to all.   S?P Steve

Look at that fuselage.  It's all compound curves and indentations.  How do you build that?  How do you sand that?  How do you mask that?  Then there's the opaque paint next to the matching transparent covering on the wing. Then there's the paint tapering to a point.  If I could do stuff like that I'd never get my bottoms down.

Like a lot of photography (no matter how talented the artist) pictures don’t do this masterpiece justice.

I saw the plane at masking stage and was totally blown away. It is largely original with it’s own wing and fuselage design, wing sheeting that matches to the color layout, Titanium landing gear, a new “clip in, no bolt” battery cover and more that I likely don’t even know about.

Hopefully Jimby will do a show and tell for a PAMPA article at some stage.

Excellent work Jimby!

I have to agree... a backwards canopy looks way better than a spinner that took the full force of a nosedive into thw pavement..

And Howard your stuff is obnoxiously impressive, paint, fit and finish!

Could we see photos of this new arming system?

And the canopy in not very backwards, not like our friend who says "but it's working just fine", now that is on backwards.

Ken:  The arrangement is not revolutionary, albeit tight.  I'm installing the Plett 20-16 right now in place of the 15-22 to move the CG forward a little.  I'd like to get it all worked out before I start airing out my dirty laundry, so to speak.
