What lines?
« on: May 29, 2022, 01:36:27 AM »
greetings all;

back in control line flying after 40 years!!  Woo Hoo! And my old club is still operational!
this is my first post here so not sure if the open forum is the correct spot, but I have a question:
My son and I are building a Brodak Waco YKS6, suggested engine is a beam mount 049 but I am going to put a Cipolla Junior diesel in it as its really compact and fits well. Planning to beef up the plywood doublers, but what lines would you use? I thinking 40 ft wire but would anyone use spectra ?

cheers,

      Phillip,

          I use ~42 feet of 30# Spectra for my 1/2A planes. Others on here possess the technical info but the difference in weight of the lines compared to steel makes a noticeable difference in the way the planes fly.

Spectra is certainly the way to go.  A couple of years ago, I made a vintage KeilKraft 'Champ' trainer for a friend who wanted to get back into C/L: powered with an ancient Mills .75cc diesel, it flew beautifully on 35ft. Spectra lines (the original recommendation had been for 25ft. Dacron!).  I wouldn't consider wire lines for a 1/2A model, not now Spectra is available.
You want to make 'em nice, else you get mad lookin' at 'em!

The Spectra lines will serve you well. Look at the FINS 40G (https://www.finsfishing.com/FINS40G-p/fns40g.htm) the 15LB Test lines will work fine for 1/2A. Check the "Adventures in Spectra" thread for the video on doing the knots when setting up the lines, works well.

Best,    DennisT
