the Viking Old Time Stunt Plane....Video
« on: March 14, 2015, 11:11:14 PM »
I got handed this Viking last Summer. Built by Wayne Willy. Then Keith Sandberg had it and flew it.He passed the good ol' Viking on to me. Flew it a couple times past Summer but never got to really know it.
So off the wall it came and out to the windy flying field here in Minnesota for some air time. Solid flyer and the K&B.40 ran like a champ. Handled the really windy conditions way better than I thought it would.
Just a wee vido of it as I love filming and flying.

That Viking sure handles the wind well. I never felt uncomfortable flying it. Good job on that Wayne.

Thanks.  I enjoyed watching the video.   I got some R/C flying in yesterday.  There was a strong 90 degree cross wind, but that makes all the more fun.

Thanks. Fun to fly and film. Makes for a good study.
The wind does add an edge at times.

Nice video Shug. The Viking is one of the better Old Time planes as far as I am concerned. That thin wing seems to work well with the 550 square inch area. I have flown mine with a Super Cyclone on spark ignition and a Fox 59, and both worked well.

Shug,
Nice video, could you post some details about the K&B 40. Prop, tank, venturi, fuel, plug.

Best,       DennisT

It sure handled the wind well. Never seen a spark ignition...bet it is really something.
Thankee Jim.

I don't have a lot of those specs since it was passed on to me. But I used an 11x4 Zinger prop and SIG 10% Champion fuel. Tank is a metal standard with muffler pressure. 4 oz I think. Not sure on plug or venturi.

On the Viking the venturi and NVA are stock original K&B. This particular engine was slightly massaged by Greg Lewandoski, a Piston Poppers club member. No mods really, it more or less just got a thorough blueprinting. Last I knew it had a Sig R/C long plug in it with the idle bar. Although a bit heavy, the K&B's can be great runners.

Very beautiful Viking. There have been many. I have a picture of Lou Wolgasts Viking somewhere but connot find it. Here is Tommy Lupers Viking from the 97 Old Time stunt at the NATS. It flew as well as it looks.

Hey Shug and Warren,

Interested in building a Viking for next years Brodak OTS, love that red model you flew Shug. Wondering if the cowl and gear mods are out of the bounds of the OTS rule? The gear mod and the internal wing tip mod may fall within the structural improvement rule. Any ideas?

I don't know enough to know. The Viking was passed on to me and I am the 5th owner. I did not build it.

Got to be some rule experts out there, love that cowl. Have you been flying the Viking much or is it just your favorite windy day flyer?

Thanks

I have only flown it about 6 times. It hangs right now on the ceiling of my Nut-Hut. Mainly flying my Strega when I fly.

Well done Shug!  Seems only natural to be flying a Viking in Minnesota!  To honor the Piston Poppers here is one solid hour of dark and powerful Viking music.

Bill, a Minnesota native soon to return.    SKOL!!!

I'm not sure if the mods are (technically) within the OTS rules either. If the cowl and wingtip braces are beyond the rules I really don't think they should be as they have zero effect either way on flight performance compared to a "stock" Viking. I suppose fidelity might be a concern at a place like VSC. I could see someone nicking the extra landing gear brace because they might feel it aids with landing the plane. I don't feel it does, if anything it might have more of a tendency to bounce than the original design.  Really, the only reason I added the brace is because single wire gear sometime needs to be tweaked back into shape over time, the brace pretty much eliminates ever needing to do so. At most local contests I don't think anyone would care about these minor mods (or even notice), they should just be happy the guy is there to fly.

I'd like to build another Viking sometime, it's a neat and good flying design, and it's not a Jamison.  ;D
