I've got a box of SIG med silk span that I used a small portion of one sheet.  I think there are 10 sheets.   But before I sell it to some one with more money than  brain, it is going to my flying friend that has helped me a lot recently.   OK Dave?

  This might be a good opportunity to review the different grades that K&S put out if anyone knows for sure what they are. GM, SGM, O,OO,OOO, something like that. I think the GM stood for "gas model" and SGM was "small gas model" and was lighter than the GM. The 0, 00, and 000 were much lighter grades similar to tissue? Feel free to jump in and correct me!

Mike I still have 38 sheets even after selling that...its sgm and oo mixed I cant tell the difference iv'e been putting it on combat planes with dope and auto clear....seems pretty tough when finished...some for you if you need it....Jim

There is little else I know of to use to get a very light,  hand rubbed dope finish on,  especially on an open-bay structure.  Silk can be used but requires a lot more dope.   Most anything can be used if finish quality is not a great issue.

Why do people use period correct engines on Vintage Combat planes? Because they want them to be built like they were when they were young. Plastic covering on something designed in the silk and dope days just seems wrong to me.

I recently tried some SIG ply-span as a substitute.  Ugh!  Won't make that mistake again.

I've used the regular ply span ( not lite flight) with some success but it requires more dope so gets heavy pretty quickly .  It is stronger than silk span though.  Great for stunt trainers.

Google a place called Easy Built Models.  They have mid weight silkspan on a roll, 10 feet long and about 18 inches wide.  As near as I can tell it is identical to the old stuff (Sig, etc.) we used before.  Cost is about $9 a roll.

I haven't used dope or silkspan in about 18 years or so. But, I got curious and went down to the shop looked around and found about 50 sheets of the stuff in various weights.
I've just never been that anal about an extra ounce of weight and have more than often been glad to have it in our windy climate.

I got a roll of that....it is just a bit heavier than Jap tissue.
Great for 1/2A or small peanut planes like Easy Built specializes in.
I got some of their house Jap tissue and it worked pretty well. Looks good with about 6 coats of sprayed clear nitrate and 3 sprayed non-shrinking butyrate.

I also bought silkspan from Easy Built Models and the 10 ft rolls are like the old medium silkspan. Easy to work with.
