It was a busy day. Winds were light until the second round. Some really great flights put in today. I crashed on the outside part of the square eight.
I ended up 18 even it was my last flight of the day. I sure am glad it was not my good airplane. Photos tomorrow

Wow.  I didn't know you crashed.  Too bad.  That was a nice airplane.  Here is a picture of the board.  I didn't get an electronic copy.

Some other misfortune appears on the scoreboard:  Bob McDonald, who flew really well at the Nats this year, had eye trouble--allergies, I think--which bothered him so bad that he withdrew from flying.  Phillip Granderson omitted his square eight on the third flight.  This is not the maneuver to leave out in F2B.  Jim Aron had an overrun which cost him landing points.  There were some ill winds in the fourth round that got both Moons, among others.

What happened to John Leidle? He was there, according to an earlier post. Maybe shopping for houses in Muncie?

Sorry to hear that Sparky crashed...but also wondering why he wasn't flying his best model? I'd be flying the best bullet I had, unless the weather was so terrible that survival was highly questionable.  ~^ Steve

This is the coolest result I could have ever hoped for.
Congratulations to everyone. Team selection is brutal and Brett I can feel your pain.
Derek, you and your Dad are now committed to an experience that can be a high point in your lives but first you must go through all the "gutwrenching" stuff. You're gonna be fine!
Orestes,"buen suerte" and Billy, "I love you man".

GO TEAM USA.    I hope Billy and Dave can teach the new guys what to look and watch out for.  Of course at this level of competition I don't beleive there is anything that will rattle them.  Looks like a hard faught battle.  Also congrats to young Ryan as he is on a big learning curve.  Go team,  DOC Holliday

I just wanted to add my congratulations to all of our FAI team members and also to David Fitzgerald once again for his WC winning performance last year. Because of that we will once again be sending 5 United States fliers to the Championships.

On a personal note, I cannot tell you how pleased I am that my old buddy, Bill Werwage once again made the team. If I'm not mistaken, this will be his 16th appearance at a World Championships!

To Jim Pollack: It would be difficult for Billy to be crowned the first 4-time World Champion since a certain Chinese flier already has 5 of them... :-\

After judging 75 flights over the two days, I am very proud of the team we are sending. They are the BEST. And it was a great treat to have Bob Gieseke, and Ronnie Farmer with me on circle two all day Saturday. (42 flights). Circle three had Jim Barnholt, Gary McClellan, and Mark Overmier. Sunday all six judges watch 33 flights, I think it was as fair a team trials as can be. If you would have ask me who the top three were  Sunday morning, I would not be able to answer, it was a big question all weekend. And, that is the part about judging I don't like, not being able to see the scoreboard. This was the 4Th team trials I have judged, I think it is time for someone to take my place, I think I'd like to play with these guys in 2011. JUST A THOUGHT, the second three would make one heck a FAI team, right?

I am taking off for Onaway, Alberta, Canada for some much needed R&R. Nats, FCM contest, FAI team trials, and getting my stuff ready for the US FAI Scale team, I am tired...........GO TEAM U S A. #^ #^

Blessings

Allen,

Having judged 2 FAI team selections years back, my hat is off to all the judges. While the flyers only have to concentrate totally on their own flights, the judges have to have total concentration for EVERY flight. That is almost super human.

Thanks to all the judges, helpers and organizers. We have a strong team due to their efforts.

Bob,

I had a few years off while China was dominating the W/C's, I didn't know that one actually dominated for 10 years!
winning 4 times would still be a great accomplishment!

New guys?  Actually Orestes isn't new and neither is Derek since he's the '98 Junior World Champion!

Uncle Jimby looks like he's holding his lunch down by main force (love the hand over the stomach).   ;D

Congrats to the team. Looks to be a strong one.

I've been trying unsuccessfully to post more Saturday photos, including ones of the top two finishers ... and our host, Robert Storick. Sorry.

Who has time for lunch?!   Seriously though, it was a great experience.  Hope some of that great flying rubs off on me.

"It was a busy day. Winds were light until the second round. Some really great flights put in today. I crashed on the outside part of the square eight.
I ended up 18 even it was my last flight of the day. I sure am glad it was not my good airplane. Photos tomorrow   "

You flew well, and unfortunately dinged a really good flying airplane, your last flight was on track to be your best one as you were improving on every flight, The quality of flying was very very good at the  TTs and you were moving up the ranks pretty well.
The plane looked very good in presentation in the air,had a nice hard flat corner and looked good in the rounds, it looked like it tracked very well too, it is a great thing that it is easy to fix the scratches that you put on it. So you really didn't loose anything but a little time.

Randy or Robert, was the plane fixable when it went in?

I made the pull out on the square 8 a little low. Scrapped the rudder and prop. I landed on the wheels. So the rudder took some paint off and maybe a 1/16 of a inch. Small scrape the size of a quarter on the out board wing tip and thats it. If they would of let me fly again I could have after a prop change.

Oh ok, the way it originally sounded was that the plane actually crashed, with a boom.  THat's a definite fix there right, a little touch paint and ready to go again.
