Whats a good tank Reccomendation for a Profile Cardinal with .46LA for full pattern?

5oz? 5 1/2oz? 6oz?

Looking at getting a brodak tank.

Du-Bro 4 ounce tank. None of my 11 .46LA's use over 3 3/4 ounces. That's on my home brew fuel. The Evo .60 uses 4 1/4 ounces and the Du-Bro tank holds 4 1/4 to  4 1/2 ounces.

I use 5% nitro fuel, 11.5 X 4 APC prop turning about 9,000 rpm, 62 ft lines eye to eye and use about 100 ml of fuel or about 3.5 ozs. Full pattern and down well before 8 minutes. A Brodak 4 oz tank works well for me.

I would copy Joe Gilbert's LA46 setup, it uses 20% nitro.  May need a 5oz tank for that..  Its easy on that design to setup tank mounting that will accommodate larger tanks if needed.

It's going to depend on airplane weight. 

A reasonable-weight Cardinal should act like the planes described.  I fly a 54 ounce Fancherized Twister that doesn't quite complete the pattern on four ounces of GMA 10% nitro, 11/11 oil, but reliably finishes with 10-12 laps to spare if I doctor up the fuel with 2 oz of Coleman fuel per gallon.

With the same fuel and a theoretically identical 46LA, a 64-ounce Atlantis (early Impact) takes six ounces of fuel to finish the pattern with between 2 and 10 laps to spare (I'm still getting the engine run sorted out).

You're probably safe with a 4oz tank if you're using 10% nitro or less.  I've felt really good using Sullivan or DuBro clunk tanks on 40-sized profiles, but tin is obviously more traditional.

There are many la 46 set up topics in the past , around the southeast , 800 ft  down to sea level , we use 10/22 powermaster or sig, 10/20. Half castor and half  syn.,  .280 Venturi +/- .010 .  With st NVA , 12/4 prop , apc  , Bolly, or copy .  5 ounce capacity gets you in the ballpark with headroom to experiment

Many items  affect  fuel mileage to complete the pattern , more pitch requires more fuel, more nitro requires  more fuel , more oil requires more fuel, bigger Venturi requires more fuel, 

This is a very simplified information to give you a idea of where to start, plane weight, drag,  engine mods , muffler , line size/ length, prop design, etc, etc   All change fuel requirements

Spiking with Coleman fuel doesn't buy you much -- the recommendation I got was no more than 2oz per gallon, and that buys you about 12-15 laps in a full pattern.  Basically, on my porky Twister, I went from having the engine crap out immediately after the clover (or in the middle, woo hoo!) to getting that dozen extra laps I talk about.

And, again, it depends on plane weight (and prop choice, as pointed out).  If the plane flies fine, I'd say leave it be.

I would also recommend something larger than 4oz.  I cannot complete the pattern using only 4oz with my plane.  Using 10/22 fuel, it would usually run out in the clover or within a lap after.  (15/22 is a guaranteed shutoff in the overhead 8 or clover) LA46 .257/OS needle, 56oz plane and a variety of appropriately low pitch 11&12" 2 blade and 10" 3 blade props. 

Initially I was using a dubro 4oz clunk and quickly had to install the larger 6oz clunk tank, which works great.  No worries now.

If you use a metal tank of any type, it may save you some headaches if you take the back of the tank off and ensure it is set up correctly and is clean!!  Otherwise loose debris/dirt will clog it up some day and cause a very lean run which has the potential to over heat the engine.  Also, I've had tanks where the pick up line was partially clogged with solder, and was loose as well as the uniflo line clogged and or loose.

Those using LA 46's around these parts and flying the full pattern use 4.5 or 5 ounce tanks....
I have had a couple engines with a variety of props and 4 ounces just isn't enough.

Forewarning, I don't run 46LA's yet...... but my os 25 la uses almost exactly 3 1/4 oz and my magnum 28 uses almost 3.5 for the pattern. If I we're building a plane now for a 46, I think I'd use a 6oz clunk tank. Maybe I'm crazy??

Jamie, my old LA46 Cardinal ARF used about 5 oz. for a pattern plus the obligatory extra laps. It had a 6 oz. Sullivan clunk, and so will my new Cardinal with the same engine.
