52 1/4" wingspan
FP 40 (old case=lighter) with ABC piston/liner
Custom built Tom Morris controls
Hollow stab and fuse
40" long
It will have Rustoleum/Monokote finish. I'm doing the filets right now, then on to final sanding.

Hey Chris, how far below the wing did you put the horizontal stab? I already told you how freekin awesome this plane is looking. Definatly Thunderbird paint.

The stab is about an inch below the wing centerline on the very bottom of the fuse. I just might attempt to do the Thunderbird scheme - - - dunno.

It's my own, I was inspired by a plane that Dave Rees had published in MAN back in 1975 I think.

Well, it's not legit for the NW version of the P.40 rules. Which is too bad, I might add. It seems to me that it is pretty obviously a profile. Mostly. Pretty much. Ah, well.

Should be a really nice looking PROFILE, I'd say. I guess the T-38 must have been USAF only, but I have a confession. I don't go to watch the T-Birds, and if they were to come here, I'd leave town. Every time I saw the Thunderbirds or was in a town when they were there, one crashed and was killed. Started at Maxwell AFB, Montgomery, AL, circa 1955. Not sure what they were flying, but I remember seeing the plane crash and cloud of smoke. I think it's happened 3 times. Not good.

I like this a LOT. I might sound like a liar, but I was thinking of designing a profile T-38 from scratch a few months ago. I just skipped it at the time 'cuz I've got too many things started already. What I had in my head is about exactly what you're showing here. You've done a very nice job with the design. This could easily be adapted into an F-4 Phantom type model too. The laminated aft fuselage should really stiffen things up back there.
Could we see a photo of the main L/G block to rib joints, I'd just like to see how someone else does them. I think I typically overbuild in that area, possibly adding unnecessary weight.
The Thunderbird scheme would be really nice, and there are some really neat Aggressor schemes that could be done also. The blue Aggressor scheme in particular with some panel line detail would be super cool and make a great looking model.
Please tell me you'll be drawing up some plans

Its looking good. If you wanted to see if you could duplicate it. I could drop some Balsa off. That would be an easy way for me to double my fleet. Since it is taking me a year to attempt to build my first plane by myself. Yea that is a nice plane.

I don’t have any plans drawn up right now, just specs/dimensions, but if there is enough interest, I could investigate having some drawn up. It’s simple enough that most anyone could build it from pictures and dimensions.
I used the Tom Morris New Millennium Wing construction technique. The stabilizer has a span of 24” that is hollow, trussed and sheeted similar to many others. The controls are reversed due to the low stabilizer location (flap horn on bottom and elevator horn on top). The Fuse has been hollowed out in the rear covered by the hollowed triplers. It’s the hollowed triplers that cover the controls.

Looks like the nose gear is mounted off the engine bolts. But, we really can't see from that view. Is that how you did it?

No, it's not off the Engine bolts.

I agree that the second photo looks like that. In fact the wire has a right angle bend that is pushed into a hole drilled in the fuse just behind the motor and into the upper motor mount.
It will have one or two plastic landing gear clips holding it in place similar to the single gear on a Flite Streak.

Would have looked nice as a full fuse too (per plan) but the way you have done the profile looks pretty sweet.......

Dave Rees plane was the inspiration, but nothing is the same.
I did not use his plan for this one.
Yes, I did use your tracings for the outlines of the ribs, I needed a proven airfoil, thanks for that, but different wing construction completely.
Yup, going to use Monokote film and Rustoleum.

Not much progress. The fillets are now done and I've begun sanding. Next step will be sealing and final sanding. I'm trying to decide between Sig Sanding sealer and Polycrylic to seal it. Any preferences, pros, cons?

It's looking GREAT. As far as sealing goes, I would just dope and silkspan everything and not use sanding sealer at all, but that's just me. Once it's all covered just prime, fill, sand etc. as necessary then paint away.
I can see myself building a copy and I'm really looking forward to seeing this one finished (but don't rush it).

I do like Paul's primer coat though. Thanks for the help Paul! When I first saw that earlier today it made me laugh.

yep, was trying to get it to the same kinda look......I got a pic of the T-38 in the thunderbird colours....it is a bit different to the F16 shot as above.

Why wouldn't this plane qualify for P-40? The front half is definately profile. The latter half can be up to 1 inch maybe more as it looks like the turtle deck is profile. I know I would let it fly in my contest. DOC Holliday

Not much to report. I have since painted it with basic white Rustoleum and covered the wings with white Monokote.
Before I invest more time in a fancy trim scheme, I want to see how it fly’s first. This week I hope to mount the flaps, elevators, engine and tank. It might be ready to fly this weekend.

I’ll try to post some pictures later tonight.

The spinner is an 1-3/4 Needle Nose from Randy Smith.

I just started to epoxy the hinges tonight. What a mess that is. After I was already waist deep in to it, I figured out a better way to keep the mess down.

It's called RC 56 canopy glue. Looks good!
