Stunt contest in Las Vegas Dec 09 and 10
« on: October 17, 2017, 01:52:02 PM »
Announcing first "Las Vegas Stunt Challenge" contest! It will be held at the ivanpah dry lake on the California side of the state line between Nevada and California. According to Google maps, it's a 3 hr drive from whittier narrows recreation area to the flying spot. Entry fee is $25 and lunch will be provided.

GPS location of the rec area

 35.566563,-115.389581

We have a CD and ED already. All skill classes can be flown depending on participation. Prizes for 1, 2 and 3 will be available also depending on participation.
Understandably, this is short notice. Just trying to get the ball rolling and make something start happening around here. Thanks! !

What specifically is the flying surface?  Paved?  Grass?  If it's a dry lake bed, can you described it in detail?  full of grit?  dusty?  or is it like pavement?

Thx,
Jim Hoffman

It is very hard packed dirt, almost pavementy. Like the salt flats. They changed the web site, and I'm still trying to locate the best pics to post a link. They did make a really cool change, in that the parking permit is no longer required. My friend and I will be driving to the site tomorrow. I'll put up some good photos

The issue is the amount of dust likely to get kicked up, or sucked up in the engine, so check it out. Might also want to check with the locals about the shape it is typically in the middle of December, it might not be all that dry by then.

It's a site we typically fly.  Very nice site. That's the primary, I actually have two back up sites ready within close proximity.
For the dirt ingestion question, I can say it's cool, but would it also help if the club provides tarps tent staked into the ground for take off area? I can definitely do that.
Also, this is an actual recreation area, complete with restroom facilities, shaded seating and all.
Feel free to ask anything. I want to make sure this works very well for anyone wanting to come out.

I definitely wouldn't want to fly off or onto a tarp. I avoid the petro-mat at the Woodland side, you just don't know what is going to happen. It looks smooth enough but when you roll across it, strange things seem to happen.

If you look behind the running airplane, is a dust cloud kicked up?

Hey, Dane,
I'm glad to see you being so proactive in promoting our sport. Putting on a good contest with all the arrangements, planning, organizing, and recruiting, is a massive chore for a CD, and I admire those who are up to the challenge.

I wish you all the best of luck. LV is certainly a great destination location, maybe even more so in the Winter. People might come from all different directions for this one. Maybe it'll catch on and become one of the classic events that everyone wants to come to.
Good luck,
Rusty

It's a great idea and I can at all make it, I will. It solves the problem Dane was discussing with me in a PM not too long ago, too.

10-4 on the artificial stuff. And no, no visible dust. I'll bring my twister out tomorrow and run it off the surface to video and post here.

Also, if I can come up with a reasonable head count of folks interested, I'll have my parents talk to one of the local hotel / casinos about a nice block rate for rooms!

Thanks rusty. I'm cutting it close on scheduling, and I understand that. Right this second, I'm operating on the "build it and they will come" principal. My goal would be to work more closely with the KOTRC in California. I have thoroughly enjoyed their contests, and would love to return the favor! For those RC enthusiasts, the TOC was a huge las vegas draw. Big cash prizes, all the fame and glory a guy could ask for. This is not that. Lol.  But you never know! Perhaps one day....

Lotto Store Rd, Jean, NV 89019

I'm having trouble getting the exact location from the blm site. I was on the phone with them quite a bit today, and it's all set for these days. Any way, Google that, and that's the entrance

To me, that does look correct. We will be driving out tomorrow to show some better pics. I'm not sure why is not on the BLM site anymore. But they did tell me there has been some cool changes recently and they removed the need for personal day use permits.

Engine test run at the lake bed. The wind was blowing, no dust, and then running my unmuffled .28 also yields no nuisance dust. It's a very hard packed smooth surface.

It's 211 miles form my house in Harbor City (doesn't touch LA harbor anywhere !?), so not that far from me.
Doubt I would be able to get the time off and my ducks in a row to go by then though, but if I could, I would.
What about wind? Is it in an area that hoots?
Being the smart guy you are, I'll bet that you know it doesn't normally that time of year, but I thought I would ask anyway.

I hope you get this off the ground.

Great question, typically the wind is negligible if any around then. There are seasons where it's steady wind out there. It is a primo Windsailing area. But not usually around that time. If you can make it out, I'll have a plane for ya Chris!

If I make it out there, I'll bring my own.
I need to get my ducks in a row with support gear. Been bumming fuel and such.
I'm going to try to put my field box together between now and then.

Thanks man.

Because there will be many folks traveling in to town for this, and in the interest of conserving space for our travelers;
First prize for expert PA will be: Choice of kit from RSM!
First prize for advanced PA will be: Choice of classic legal kit from RSM!
The winners will be awarded a certificate at the contest good for the kit of their choice.
Big thanks to Eric Rule and RSM for supporting this budding contest!

Hotels are basically in the same parking lot as the entrance to the park. There's buffalo Bills, Primm Valley, and Whiskey Pete's. Or, a 25 minute drive lands you on the Strip or many other local casinos and hotels.
This is an AMA sanctioned contest. Thanks for the support in starting up what I hope to be a very nice annual event.

Thank you sir. It's been through the ringer since building. My wife folded the gear up into the wing once, so I fixed it. Then she kinda gave it the ol' figure 9. Not too bad so I repaired it. I'm surprised it still flys well!

And yes, absolutely, camping is permitted on site. Two week maximum and fires must be contained in a pan of some sort. BBQ's are also allowed.

Also, to note. The phone number to book rooms is on the flyer. Rooms start at $29 a night. There's three hotel / casinos at the entrance. Very nice places indeed.

Please make note, slight correction to directions on flyer

correct directions change on flyer

Coming from Las Vegas head south on I-15 for approximately 40 miles. Exit at Primm (exit #1) and turn left at the bottom of the exit. Right if coming from California. Then turn right at the light at Las Vegas Blvd. and follow it around the Primm Valley Casino and outlet mall past the mini mar and Fashion Mall. All the way around to the south side.

At the far corner, behind the outlet mall, there is an open gate and dirt road on the right leading out onto the lake bed. Turn right through the gate and follow the road about 1-5 miles. (Note: Do NOT drive out onto the lake bed - stay on the road).

A quick reminder, next weekend is the contest. I've received calls emails and letters in the mail for applications. Pre-registration is a great help, and there's still time to mail them.
If you're on the fence, send it anyway. No show's are refunded!
A huge heartfelt thank you to all who have helped, are helping and anyone who's shown interest in this. We want to make it a wonderful experience for all of you!

Dane,
You might be able to control any dust problems by having a hand pump bug sprayer filled with water that could dampen the takeoff strip.

Dennis, thanks. The dust situation has been addressed. This happens to one of those natural oddities that does not create nuisance dust. We are great out here. Hopefully everyone enjoys this site as much as we do. I feel it makes a great place to hold a contest.

Good news for the gents in California who fly at whittier narrows recreation area. I drove out this morning to fly in the toys for tots event, and on the way back I clocked the drive.
2hours 50 min from whittier narrows park to the contest spot! If you can't make this one, keep that in mind for the next one.

I went out this morning to meet Gary Gingrich and LeRoy Black. We were able to put in a few flights in some great weather. I put up some signs at the site entrance to make it easy to find.
Putting together this contest has been a substantial undertaking! I'm happy to do it, it's been a fun learning experience, and people have been calling and emailing with more help than I could have imagined. So thank you to all, even those who were unable to attend.

I should get there mid morning Saturday to watch and will post some photos.
I hope to buy a gallon of fuel and get a few practice flights for Sunday.
Really looking forward to hanging out and make some new flying friends. 😎

Thanks Dane for putting this contest on. And all the support staff.
