Here is another one-----I don't ever want to hear that C/L flying is the most dangerous again.

From what I seen of the jet in the film, it looks like structuarl failure.  The B-29 and the rocket it looks like they knew what they were doing.  But, accidents do happen and it likes the jet guys were prepared.  DOC Holliday

That looked like a servo or receiver failure. Also note it was at about 150 mph. Not a good place to be . Probably the servo as jets generally have a failsafe mode that essentially places them into a snap turn into the ground to kill velocity and forward motion as quickly as possible after loss of signal and control. No snap so no loss of control. Had to be a servo failure. And yea, that was about $4to 5K.

I saw some other jet R/C crashes on youtube.  Including the 8 turbine engine B-52.  I do not know HOW the insurance companies can allow those to be covered!  That small turbine crashing was still quite an explosion........what if it had hit into a flight line area during a meet.  Those types, and the huge "1/4 scale", might bring a real downfall to model aviation if a tragic accident does ever occur.

A fast combat or big class speed plane CAN be dangerous if something goes wrong, but the damage and/or injury would likely happen to only one person.  One of those turbines crashes, and explodes, like on the video, in a congested area, and many people would be involved.  Heaven forbid that ever happens.

saftey nets used at speed contest are very safe. only the pilot is allowed in the circle when the speed ship is in the air and at 200 mph i don;t thik he is going to get hit.

Hi Joey,

Yes, cages for speed, and combat planes have fuel shut offs in the event of a fly away.  That's what I was indirectly referring to.

For C/L, the risk of injury is very low compared to the R/C turbines and 10 foot giant scale R/C planes weighing Lord knows what.  Especially the risk to large numbers of people in case of a catastrophic event.

Looking closely at the jet it appears that it was breaking apart before it went down.  While the video was buffering (slow connection) I noticed what appeared to be parts of the plane trailing behind it. When the video restarted it appeared that one wing was fluttering.

Hi Joey,

You jogged a long lost memory with the "pylon" reference.

The first R/C contest I ever saw was back in '72-'73.  I saw Pylon there for the first time.  What i remember most about pylon that day was when one of them went in and buried it's "new" K&B 40 about 5 inches in the ground!  If it had hit someone, it would have been all over.....

The scariest part was when a DR. was flying his large scale FW-190 and it got away from him on take off.  It buzzed the tent missing it by about 2 feet and wildly flying over the crowd at full throttle!  He regained control, landed and took some "nitro" pills for chest pains........

Last time  was at the NATS (1996), a T-33 turbine overflew the corner of the "L" pad while stunt was going on.  I wasn't flying, but I looked up from the corner and it was over the circles quite a while.
