Nobler vs Gieske Nobler vs Brodak Nobler

If you had an original Green Box Nobler, a Top Flite Gieske Nobler and a Brodak Nobler kit on the shelf which would be the most fun to build and the most fun to fly?

Personally, I would go with the '57 Green Box Nobler.  It has less wing offset, and is a little bit more advanced (for whatever reason! LOL!!) than the '52.  Plus, it is the one that so many of the models we saw in the late '50s and through the '60s were built off of! LOL!!

The Gieseke is a great flying model, though.  The '52 ain't bad either, just takes some extra trimming to get the extra wing asymmetry trimmed out of.

I've had all three and would have to toss a coin.   All three are great flyers when trimmed right.   H^^

What I would like about the '52 Nobler from Brodak's is that you can fly it in OTS, Classic, Nostalgia 30, your particular PAMPA class and it painted with military or Caudron colors, you can "fly" it in Sport Scale (Tee Hee).

The Gieske is clearly the best flier.

Ive built, 51 and 52 Noblers with various engines to multiple Wins in Classic at Nats level. Also had a Greenbox, Ive flown the arf Noblers, the Brodaks, and I've got plans for the Topflight Gieseke Nobler. ( Built one 20 years ago.. )

My current plane of choice for the US Nats in classic ?
UHP Drawn Gieseke Nobler, without a doubt superior to the above in every capacity performance wise.

I agree with Brett and PJ that the Gieseke Nobler is probably the best, performance wise, but the "nostalgia", and significance, of the Green Box makes it my personal favorite.

Probably my real favorite of the "Noblers" is Mr. Louis Grondal's AMA Special.  Built from a Green Box kit and winner of the first two official FAI World Championships!  Interestingly he actually used a stock Nobler to fly the two "FAI" rounds and the "Special" to fly the "AMA" round, hence his name for it.  (yes, both patterns were flown at the 1960 WCs)

Lightest doesnt equate to best.

They fly amazing when they carry more weight, provided you have the thrust. Brett has been pushing this idea for longer than I care to remember.

Did Mr.Aldrich ever say what plane the Nobler was inspired by,was it a fighter or something else or did he just start cutting balsa one day and happen to get it right? T.J.

Hop over to the OTS page and see the recent topics on color scheme on 51-52 Nobler and comparing the 51-52 with the 57 Nobler. That should answer all your questions.

Hi Russ,

The Brodak kit is the closest available to the "original" Nobler.
