Single Edge Razor Blades
« on: February 23, 2018, 07:12:56 PM »
I am having a heck of a time finding a brand of single edge razor blades that are sharp.  Any suggestions?

Thank you

My favorite (at any price) razor blades and #11's is AmericanLine/American Safety Razor. See: https://www.amazon.com/American-Safety-Razor-66-0403-Single/dp/B0035ER2BI/ref=sr_1_cc_1?s=aps&ie=UTF8&qid=1519439597&sr=1-1-catcorr&keywords=American+safety+razor+.009+blade

Edit- just realized they come in .012" and .009". I use the .009. Link above was changed to the .009.

Five-pack:  sku # 1088848.  They also have larger sizes, including hundred-packs.  They're very sharp!

I have the scalpel blades and #11, what I am talking about is just the single edge razor blades.  I use them to trim the excess covering from the wing after I dope it one or the excess Ultracote after ironing it on.  Some of the blades get dull after trimming one wing and instead of a clean quick cut they will grab and tear the material.  Believe it or not, some of these blades are sharper than others.  It is a personal preference of mine when trimming the excess material to use the single edge razor blade rather than an exacto or scalpel.

Mike, I use these for trimming monokote. I use them only for that task, and for that task only these. Lol.
But for real, they are unbelievably sharp. Like the solingen blades (I think they're out of business?) So this is a great replacement.

Exactly what I use for trimming the covering. Scary sharp, easy to handle, (just being as sharp as they are will make you careful) throw away when done.

Shaving SE blades
http://www.shoeboxshaveshop.com/single-edge-blades.html

I know, a couple 5 pack costs the same as a 100 pack of utility SE razor blades...  there is a difference.

Thank you for the scalpel link.  I like using those over xacto style blades

I get my single edge and double edge blades from Harbor Freight.  Low cost enough I don't hesitate to get a new blade.  Even use the double edge in my safety razor. D>K

Whatever blade you choose, they should be carbon steel. This is especially true of scalpel and double edge blades. It's hard to find carbon double edge but they're out there. Look for blue blades. This is especially true if using them in a razor plane.

Check "Martor" brand blades. They make a lot of different blades, including a #11 clone. I have not found a GEM clone on their website, but they do make some utility knife blades, and some "industrial blades" that might be useful. The good news is that they are Ginsu sharp, but they are also very expensive. If you can find a good price on them, BUY!  y1 Steve

I've noticed that no matter where you source the SE razor blade I still only get one pass when doing Monokote and the  blade is shot. They don't make them like they use to.

That's why I buy the double edge. Same price for a 5 pack, and you get 4 corners instead of 2.

Old cheap skates like me, I've done complete MonoKote planes with one single edge blade.  Have done several planes with a double edge blade. H^^

Gentlemen, sorry for the threadjack,

Mr. John,
I also shave with a DE...and use Personna brand platinum blades for about $12/100 CT box. Occasionally I'll eBay an assortment pack just to make sure there is no sharper deal out there from the other makers.

This is the first time I've heard anyone mention DE blades from Harbor Freight. Are you buying your DE blades there for convenience?

And to hang this one back on topic...last week's razor blade gets put in a medicine bottle to be used for cutting tissue, or put in my hobby-sized antique DE razor plane.

TIA

Yes I have a local Harbor Freight.  I too save my DE blades in medicine bottle to use in the shop. D>K

AY YI YI, some is still doing this?! Go get yourself a Gillette Mach 3. The blades are actually cheaper because you can use a single cartridge for about 3 months, so while it costs $5, you don't toss it after a week. And much less prone to cuts with far less care required.

This appeared as a pop-up, but it's here in SoCal. They have an amazing variety of blades and its interesting that some are marked as extra sharp. See: https://www.razorbladeco.com/single-edge-blades

Hi Brett,

I like cartridges, but they don't last two weeks for me...and that's if I skip a weekend.
At this point, shaving DE is a hobby...as is my single edge throat-cutter. If I have to do it, then I'll do it with style.

Shoot, the shaving hobby is cheaper than 1/2A flying!

PS My wife says she can tell the difference...and prefers the DE shave.

Don't understand how some guys confuse single edge razor blades with No 11 scalpels  ::) Mikes request was for "single edge razor blades" + 1 on the Mator brand if they make them.
