Robert clearly said Windex. I don't understand why the detergent and ammonia would be either useful or desirable. But maybe there is a good reason. I've been places where I might not want to use pure "water" from the faucet, come to think of it!

There is plenty of light and medium silkspan available...either work well on sheeted surfaces

The best substitute for heavy silkspan is Polyspan. And you don't need any water (which will warp a balsa-skinned wing-unless you seal it with lots of clear dope)

Rich, other than that stuff Brodak calls Silkspan, where in the heck can you find good Silkspan. I sure can't find it anywhere,

Cuz I don't know now from reading this thread and then a few of the other threads on Silkspan

My question is...Is the Silkspan 00, GM and SGM that Sig Mfh sells not SilkSpan?

There are a couple of planes I will probably cover with PolySpan heat shrink and they recommend doing hard curves on wing tip with SilkSpan first so I bought the Sig stuff

Thanks for showing your polyspan technique. Now what I've read makes more sense. I'll probably switch from the current imitation silkspan to polyspan. I still have a little old real silkspan left. That works well, but the new "silkspan" (last decade) isn't satisfying or worth the trouble. The guys asking might also do searches here and on the other forum(s) to see what we said about the new stuff. There were good posts on the difference in both forums. This post is just what we need though, for those of us who haven't used polyspan. Thanks again.

I have over 175 Youtube videos on my channel showing public domain how too's and many private on Control line Craftsman and more added each week.I working on a complete how to Compound Mold now. It is no different from Bob Hunt's compound molding techniques tape. That is where I learned how to do it. Without Bob's video I would have been lost.

Well it was from a search here that I read about silkspan on the tips instead of the poly span but now that I see how they are done with a bit of heat I get it

Not sure how fast Sig Mfg stops listing stuff, but just looked and several of the things I ordered earlier this year are no longer in the list of add to cart items....dang, should have got more than samples of each ( I ordered on each of every covering they had on the site) so I have one sheet of 00, one GM, and one SGM and neither is enough for a wing except the Koverall

I got a 3' x 9' of Dave Brown Skyloft a nylon covering that is put on wet

The Poly T I got from RSM looks very consistent for the whole 15 feet with no voids

I also got a few yards of silk from Dharma and the 8mm colored stuff looks and feel good

Spent a few days now reading almost every SilkSpan thread and don't see any definitive way to tell the old "good stuff" from what ever is offered now...but is is no big deal as I can use Poly, Silk, or Mono and arrive at the finish I desire for these vintage combat planes I am building
