Shout out to Brian Massey
« on: March 20, 2016, 08:06:42 PM »
I encourage all you PAMPA members to download the latest Stunt News (awesome job once again Bubba Hunt!) and to read and review Brian Massey's incredibly good coverage of the Golden State Stunt Championships.  May be the best meet coverage I've ever read; makes me feel like I was there (as I should have been).  You all should download it and read/view it on-line just to see the pictures in full color as I doubt they will all be in color in the print version.  What a gorgeous bunch of airplanes and what an amazing competition that closely approximated our recent Team Trials.  I won't spoil the punch line but...as a teaser...the team was close but no banana in the bunch!  Made me wish I could still fly toy airplanes!

While you're checking out the airplanes note the site...maybe the best set of circles in CL Stunt history down there in middle California.

Wonderful job, Brian.

I think it is clearly the best site at which I have flown. If someone can't get to the NATs, they should come to Golden State, because it's as close to a West Coast NATs as we are ever likely to get.

Ditto from me.  I have to drive a thousand miles to get there and wouldn't miss it for the world.  Absolutely the best site for a stunt contest I've ever see.  The motel is literally within walking distance to the flying site.  Brian, Mike and the Madera crew do an outstanding job.  Look forward to seeing all my friends in October.

First let me say that this is my first posting to this forum and I hope I placed it in the correct spot.

The article on the Golden State Stunt Championship in Stunt News was truly outstanding! Great job Brian!! You captured everything with pictures and words for those who missed a fantastic event and brought back the "feeling" of what it was like for those who attended, like the moment when Brett Buck's score was posted.

Back in the late 60's and early 70's I used to compete in control-line events as a member of the Stockton Air Devils and later Escadrille Model Airplane Club in Lodi. Some may recall the annual contest we had in Stockton back in those days at the old Delta College campus.

Anyway, to keep a long story short, I believe it was back in September 2014 that somewhere I heard/read about the GSSC in Madera. So in October 2014 I decided to make the 100 mile trip down to Madera and check it out as a spectator. It had been some +40 years when I attended my last contest. Boy was that trip worth it! Instantly my mind was taken back to those great days as a teenager and competitive flying. I could only watch the Sunday morning flights and had to leave to get back to Stockton for an appointment at 3:00. The last flight I saw was Dave Fitzgerald's. All I can say is WOW!

After GSSC, I sent Dave an email letting him know that I attended the GSSC and was very impressed with everything, his plane, his flight and the entire event. I wanted to know the results and he replied back with the results along with the link to Stunthanger.com for additional information. But what stuck in my mind from Dave's email was this comment, "Next time bring a plane and fly!" So for 2015 it was my goal to "bring a plane and fly" at the GSSC. And I did.

However, to do this required a lot of help and assistance from "strangers" that gave of themselves that I've come to know. Thanks to Dave for telling me to "bring a plane and fly", but also thanks to Lanny Shorts, Brett Buck, Shawn Lenci and Pete Cunha, just to name just a few. Without your assistance I would have never made it. Again, thank you.

But a big "Thank You" must go to Brian Massey and this "crew" who have made the GSSC a first class event. Next time, may I suggest that you go easy on the wind? A little is good, too much is crazy! ;)

I look forward to this years event. If you haven't put the GSSC in your plans and are thinking about it, do what Dave told me, "Bring a plane and fly"!

Attached is a picture of "Circulas" that I flew at last years GSSC.

Thank you everyone for the kind words. As if I needed a "shout-out", I get plenty of those from my wife. (Or is that just yelling?  ;D) I'm really glad that those who attend like the site, and the overall experience. But all the kudos need to be shared with the entire PC Flyers club; it is a club filled with some really great people. They are all more than happy to work the weekend making sure all the attendees have a good time.

And my kudos go to Mr. Hunt. He was very patient with me, emailing stuff back and forth to make sure the finished product represented the quality of the event, and was what he needed; Thanks Bob for your help and support!

In closing; yes Ted, where the hell were you!

Brian,

After flying at the ARF-OFF (the only flying I did last year, as I recall) and absolutely kicking the butt of that kid that eked out a victory over the entire US Team at the GSSC I saw no reason to compete anymore.  Nothing left to prove and no place to go but dowwwwwwn!

Afraid my modeling nowadays is pretty much limited to pontificating about how good I used to be online where I can't see the readers rolling their eyes at my B.S.

Bottom line, Brian, I just wanted to be sure everyone got a look at your coverage of a great event.  Appreciate your shout out to the club members that make it all happen.

Ted I figured you decided to play golf instead of fly at GSSC....I didn't attend due to a knee injury

Ted

I can understand your feelings, but you still have a tremendous amount you can share with the CLPA community. Therefore I feel it necessary to draw upon the seldom used rule, XVI paragraph II under "Duties of the CD", which covers the powers delegated to said CDs by PAMPA. Therefore, with that power I hereby now grant upon you the prestigious honor of becoming the first official GSSCPEJ. That of course stands for "Golden State Stunt Championships Permanent Expert Judge". Now you will be able come to the contest and turn the tables on those pesky whipper snappers that have been besting you. You will also now be able to enjoy flying classic simply for the fun and enjoyment. Of course your reward will go well beyond the free Saturday Night Banquet meal the GSSC grants judges, it will include the pride of knowing you're providing an essential component to a successful contest.

Another benefit of being a GSSCPEJ is the free medical exam. If you ever fail to show up as scheduled, my friend Guido will visit you to check on your health. He will give you a free medical exam, paying very close attention to the condition of your knee caps. There is no charge for his exam.

Now haven't I fixed everything?

Hey Brian!  ;D Isn't Guido also "practicing" and "providing" proctology exams??  I understand he never went to school for it but supposedly he watch a do-it-yourself video on YouTube!!    LL~ LL~
