I have never met Rusty, or even spoken to him on the phone.  Just the odd message back and forth.  Today I am as sad as if a friend across the road had passed away.  Rusty was a man of peace, a man of character, a man of integrity.  You could tell those things just by the way that he wrote.
When I joined Cox Engine Forum years ago my first memory of him was a video of him flying his Little Satan with an RR-1 in the church yard across the road from his home.  From there I saw him quickly grow in his passion for flying the stunt pattern.  Considering his health challenges he has done a remarkable job of adding to our hobby and helping to influence those (like me) who were never quite as committed as he was.

Our hobby has lost a great man; small in stature but huge in heart.

“The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace.”

Mike.  If you speak to Holly please pass on this Aussie misfit's sincere condolences and assure her that Rusty has truely touched hearts around the world.

We got the word of Rusty's passing late last night. Actually it was early this morning. Some of us were hanging on at the Bench when the phone call came to Mike. Those of us who were there shared in the grief of his passing. Grief isn't really the right word, it's more like we're going to miss him and his spirit he brought to the Bench Mondays ands Fridays.

He was a man of courage dealing with the issues he had for so long. I only knew that he went in for dialysis, which is serious enough. He never mentioned to most of us the real severity of the issues he was dealing with.

His great love for the hobby, and those who shared it with him, was infectious. He had a great knowlege, especially for smaller engines and planes that left with him.

Her was a friend to all.

He will be missed.

Tight lines, and fair winds our dear friend.

May God bless you, your family, and we, who are left behind until our day. I hope when that comes for me, I'll be able to join you, and all those who have passed on at that great circle in the sky. What a contest we'll have then.

Rusty will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him however briefly it may have been for some of us.
His contributions for our hobby were immense and fortunately much has been recorded.
I would like to express the deepest of sympathies to Holly and all of Rusty’s family and friends.
With our heartfelt blessings,

Although I only knew him briefly through Stunt Hangar and the Hangout I found that he had a great compassion for the hobby and a lust for life no matter his circumstances. He truly will be missed by all. My wife and I offer our deepest condolences to his family and we will to continue to keep them in our prayers as well. Ed and Terri.

It was a heartbreaking moment when Mike got the call in the early morning hours that Rusty had passed. There will always be a place for him in our biweekly video chats even as we will miss his presence. I propose that anyone reading this message join our video chat this Monday to raise a toast to our dearly departed friend. The link will be posted in the At the Bench section on this forum. Thight lines and rest in peace Rusty.

Very Sad news Rusty's passing.
He was such a nice guy that quietly battled with own his health problems but always kept a positive and helpful attitude .
When I first meet Rusty on the StuntHangar hangouts years ago, he went out of his way to welcome me and my family from New Zealand into his show, even if the  accents were hard to understand or the internet connection was poor.
I feel we really got to know Rusty over the years in the hours of conversation shared not only our interest in model aircraft but also of cars and music and science.
His stories of his Camaros and rebuilding his SBC engines and drag racing them were always interesting. Comparing our favorite albums and live concerts (got to listen to some Blue Oyster Cult, Ted Nugent and Grateful Dead latter) His love of science and space/rockets/technology/exploration was very inspiring too as he kept up to date of every new development in the current space race (with updates on whatever SpaceX were doing).

Rusty followed my sons Otto and Max as they improved their flying and also what building projects they had going or competitions they had been to.
His love of 1/2 models inspired me and my sons to have 1/2A or 049 only days where we would relive something of the fun of those small models so many of us started with. Tee Dee 049/051' , Lil Satan and Baby Flite Streak will always be associated in my head with his great videos on his You Tube Channel   (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgYkP8ZpK_AtOfDvWYCANyA)

Weird thing today as I heard the sad news is, here in New Zealand is in fact Fathers Day and were thinking of Rusty when flying a Cox 049 powered model because it was too windy for 'serious' stunt flying but was the right time for good fun flying!

I very much regret being unable to meet Rusty in person but at least got to gain so much form the Hangout chats but it is also a pity due to the covid thing I was not able to join in more in recent shows as I had to limit our bandwidth use because of working/schooling at home .

Perhaps as a lasting tribute to Rusty we need an annual 1/2A day to celebrate his life.

Thanks Rusty for all you have done, our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Regards Gerald

It would be difficult to craft a message to express the sadness felt from the loss of such a great man as Rusty that would add anything more to the amazing testimonials given above by and from all of his friends from around the world. Perhaps this is his legacy; a man who was loved and admired by so many, and even by those who never actually met the man in person.

Rest now in God's Good Peace good and faithful servant; you touched so many...

I only knew Rusty through Stunt Hangar and the twice weekly chats, but felt he was my friend.  He obviously had a lot on his plate, but always sounded cheerful and enthusiastic.  I especially liked his enthusiasm over the recent developments in the space programs.  He was a BIG fan of the new Lost In Space series, and got me hooked on it too!

I shall miss him but take comfort in knowing he is not hurting anymore.

For a man I'd only seen on Stunthanger once or twice briefly and heard of a few times but never spoken to in person, news of his passing has saddened me deeply. It was obvious he was the type of guy everyone would naturally take an instant liking to - because - perhaps he was already your friend even if you didn't know him. Rest in peace mate.

Last Fall we were camping at Weston Lake campground after the Huntersville contest, waiting to go to Ellenton, FL for that contest. Our campground, east of Ft Jackson, SC, was just a few miles from Rusty’s home. When I gave him a call he invited us to come by for a tour of his workshop. I told him we had three yellow Labs that were very curious and I didn’t want to leave them alone in the camper that long, and he insisted we bring the dogs as well.
Anne and I visited with Rusty and Holly, the dogs ran around in their fenced yard, and we had a pretty good ‘shoot the bull’ session. I got a tour of Rusty’s extensive workshop and a backstory on several of the many models he had stashed in there.
Rusty gave me a brief synopsis of some of his recent health troubles. I’ll sum it up by just saying, he got dealt a really bad hand. But in the (too) short time I knew Rusty I never once heard a discouraging word from him. He was always upbeat and optimistic, and never failed to brighten my day.
Farewell, my friend.
I have seen the light, and it’s powered by a lipo.

New thread Started at In Memory of our Friends------I spoke to Holly yesterday. There will be no funeral or memorial service at this time. Rusty is being cremated and Holly will scatter his ashes in the places he enjoyed most. She did speak of a gathering of sorts after all Covid restrictions are lifted. We'll just have to wait to see when and where that will occur.

Also, you can tap the "Tribute Wall" link and leave a message for Rusty's family.  It may help them if they see how many lives Rusty touched and the way that he was so loved and respected by all.

Rusty,

"RRC" as I tagged Rusty, "Rusty Rattle Can."

What a guy! It's because of Rusty I started experimenting and now use only aerosol cans.

Sure, I was skeptical, but Rusty gave me the confidence to use aerosol cans because he had been using them for years. Rusty always returned my emails.

Rusty was the only modeler in the SH Forum who was on my "free graphics" list, but Rusty never asked for free graphics.

Rusty was kind enough to Post a Thread about his Osprey over at CFC Graphics, photos and all.

683 views and not one single comment or kudos? It's never to late to give a fellow modeler the kudos he deserves.

https://stunthanger.com/smf/cfc-graphics/my-osprey/

I went back a few years in the Forum and read some of Rusty's comments. I suggest others do the same.

Yes, we will miss Rusty, what a guy!

"Rusty, I told you years back, every time I pick up an aerosol can, I would think of you."

And I am.

Charles
