I just ran across something interesting. A 4 engined giant peacemaker with 4 diesels. The british love their peacemakers and their diesels.

Trying to start 4 diesels on the same airplane? I wouldn't doubt it.

I have yet to see a first flip start on a diesel. I suppose it does happen on FAI team racers.

Starting diesels is really not that ######### they are set.  Especially the sport type diesels.  I sold a 29 size diesel that had lain around for 30+ Years.  After cleaning and mounting to test stand, it started on third flip.  It is when you try to get that last little bit out of the engine that sometimes makes them hard to start.  I also have an old McCoy .049 that started on just a half dozen flips.  Just remember that diesels like to surprise you once in awhile by starting when you don't expect it.  Have fun,  DOC Holliday

The real trick is trying to contain the ether.

Can get the ether out of a spray can of starter fluid.  John Deer is suppose to have the most ether in their starter fluid.

Note that the Ultimate Peacemaker is powered by Olivers. Olivers, for the younger guys who do not know, are good running, easy handling diesels. I have an Original, and a CS copy Mk-3 .15. Both start easily and run well.

Back in the fifties, when I got my original, there was an approximately three month waiting list to get one. I was fortunate that my LHS got one for another guy who cancelled...only took me about a month. They were and are that good.

Oliver also made a 1.5 and 3.5, but I have no experience with those. But one or two flip starts is not out of the question.

I'm fed up I missed seeing this fly at the Nats.....

Tom Hughes had a model at the Nats (a Dominator combat wing) with a Frog 2.49bb - that too had not been run for 30 years and started third flip.

Diesels are the same as glows - some are easy to start others are pigs - worn out ones (of either type) often tend to be pigs.

Actually, I haven't run my Frog 2.49bb's lately either.
