I flew with Charlie in the late seventies while I was stationed in San Diego.

It is not. Nor is it PT Granderson. I don't know who it is. Several were deputized in those days.

Did anybody get to see if that R/C Dynajet Phantom flew? I remember reading the article about it in that early 70's or late 60's American Aircraft Modeler that is under the landing gear, and just wishing I could see it fly. I'll have to did the mag out and re-read it. At that time period, I don't think there was any kind of "trainer" that you could fly to be ready for that thing!

That first picture, the one of Dick Mathis, started me thinking.
I never got to fly with him. From what I hear and read he was quite the accomplished competitor.
I wish I had been able to see his work, the Chizlers and his patterns.
I remember the book he wrote about the mental (anal?) aspects of stunt competition and how he claimed to be "The Mayor of Some Little Texas Town". (I always thought Texans were elected by caliber and not some other skill set)
By the time I showed up he was into free flight models and running his kit business. I spent some time on the phone with him collaborating about the Stiletto kits and he was a pretty impressive guy. Happy, friendly, well spoken, and no doubt educated. Fast Richard is one of several people that I wish I had gotten to know better.

Just wondering here, if that's Dick Mathis with the Chizler in the first photo, then who's name is on the model below the canopy? I haven't quite been able to make it out but it doesn't look like Dick's name.

Yep, that's Dr. Mathis (PhD). That name under the canopy is his "nom de plume" = Fast Richard.

The yellow airplane in the back ground that is being wiped off is my airplane. That`s Bart Klapinski wiping it down. When building it I didn`t like the Rudder so Bob ended up designing the Rudder on it. Great Flying plane. Had a tiger .46 for power.

Joining this forum and reading thru the post often triggers some long forgotten memories for me. I love the picture of Dick. I remember him being at our house many a time and always enjoyed seeing him at the Nat's.

Sure. I knew Melvin well. We had a DCT entourage to Chicago in 1970. I flew Mevlin's rat racer. I have the picture someplace. We were going 130 MPH three-up. We didn't win or get into any trouble.

One of the memories of the 1977 Riverside Nats was AMA President Johnny Clemens' high interest in NASA. They drop-tested the space shuttle Enterprize during the Nats and Johnny got the radio broadcast going on the PA system in the big hanger.
