That first picture, the one of Dick Mathis, started me thinking.
I never got to fly with him. From what I hear and read he was quite the accomplished competitor.
I wish I had been able to see his work, the Chizlers and his patterns.
I remember the book he wrote about the mental (anal?) aspects of stunt competition and how he claimed to be "The Mayor of Some Little Texas Town". (I always thought Texans were elected by caliber and not some other skill set)
By the time I showed up he was into free flight models and running his kit business. I spent some time on the phone with him collaborating about the Stiletto kits and he was a pretty impressive guy. Happy, friendly, well spoken, and no doubt educated. Fast Richard is one of several people that I wish I had gotten to know better.
