Rear Exhaust Info needed
« on: October 27, 2009, 12:59:08 PM »
Good Day everyone!!
My new project this winter will be a Rear Exhaust Set up 40VF. I need to know "IF" Anyone has ever had any problems with Mounting holes for the muffler elongating the engine flange, and/ or, any welds breaking on the muffler it's self? These are my concerns.

I never had either of those problems.  You'll like that engine.

Scott,

I've never tried one with a muffler. With a header, I just use some parts sealer between the header and the gasket (both sides) and snug up the bolts.

I was looking at my VF 40 the other night and did notice that the mounting ears are not very robust looking.  I think we are getting away with mounting the header and supporting the pipe properly but a muffler may be another story.  The extra weight and add to that an exhaust extension could present a problem.  I would suggest supporting the muffler with some kind of rubber mount or isolating the muffler with a coupler at the exhaust exit.  I have been down that road with the Stalker 76 and 51.

Speaking of pipes, Norm, your mods to the ES Composites pipe work great.

Thanks Howard

I am presently running a VF 40 in my Sultan and it runs just fabulous.  The entire set-up per Brett Buck/Paul Walker NO deviations.

Norm,

That was my experience. It's a turnkey setup. I set mine up just as Paul and Brett told me to and it ran great. I couldn't have been happier. Depending on how this new plane comes out, that setup may end up in it.

I would hasten to point out that the setup is actually Paul's - my only association with it was to post it a lot of times on the internet. In fact, I think it's identical to what Paul provided in the Impact article in 1991.

I ran a very different system (with some success) for many years, but I have since come to the conclusion that Paul's is better in most cases.

Scott,
My experience was that the VF40 was that it was the smoothest running stunt motor I ever run.  Little to no vibration at all.

Norm,
What's your mod to the ES pipe?

Search VF 40 in the stunt forums.  Brett has posted it numerous times.  I am presently running the small venturi as my VF 40 is 25 years old but still new.

I worked with Ed from ES to move the baffles and hole sizes.  If you want the drawing that I sent Howard let me know.  I don't know if Howard made the mods or ordered one from ES.

http://www.escomposites.com/ , but I forget which one to get.  Were I to do it again, I'd try to get just the outside parts unassembled and put in my own baffles per Norm's spec.
