Powermaster prices
« on: September 18, 2011, 05:52:15 PM »
I just left the local hobby shop and noticed the new supply of Powermaster fuel.  Good grief, $28.99/gal for 10/22!  Prices for LiPoly batteries are going down and getting better.  Just and observation. ;)

I think we (Mike's Hobby Shop, Carrollton TX) are selling it for $13.99 or maybe $14.99 a gallon. I'm at home now otherwise I'd know for sure. Trouble is, we're not set up to ship hazardous materials so we don't ship fuel. FYI, Omega (Morgan Fuel) is now selling a 10% 11/11 control line blend. This is available from the big distributors, so your local hobby shop should be able to sell it much cheaper than $28.00! It's fairly new, and I haven't tried it, or even heard any feedback yet, so I can't say how it runs compared to Powermaster.

I like Wildcat Premium Extra 10% amended to 20% total oil for the AL piston motors and 25% for the relics by adding SIG castor oil.  I get the fuel in Orlando for about $13.50 per gallon from the LHS.  Powermaster's fuel prices are doo-doo.  Send 'em a message by not buying their stuff!

We just got an order for around 48 gallons. and it was about $16/gallon. I would suggest ordering directly, we had no end of problems trying to get what we wanted via Horizon.

I've been using Wildcat 10% (Premium Xtra) @ $15.99/gal.  Most of my flying now uses about 1650 mah out of 2600 mah availble per flight.

I just picked up Powermaster 15% for $19.98 at my LHS. A couple of bucks more than it used to be, but nothing like 28 clams!

Cheers,

Check with Randy Rich of Rich's Hobbies.  I've used his fuel since 1991 and he'll mix what you want.  I won't tell you the price I pay at the Toledo show, but it beats anything I see in this post.  Now, there's shipping costs I don't pay at Toledo, but just the same, he may be able to help you where price is concerned.
Randy is in Houston, TX and his number is 713-661-5458

Here's a bit more info. Horizon Hobby shows a retail of $174.99 for a case of 6 gallons of Powermaster 10% 11/11. This works out to $29.16 per gallon. Any shop that is charging $28.99 is basically charging full retail. Also, even at the maximum volume, lowest dealer price, we would still pay $3.00 per gallon more for this fuel from Horizon than what we pay direct from Powermaster. And for the record, we do have it @ $13.99 per gallon.

Yea, I bought a gallon from the same place Mike mentioned. Mostly because I was out of fuel and didn't want to drive to the the Wildcat. I won't do it again. May see about ordering by the case from Powermaster if the price is less than that. While I plan to go the way Mike as gone, I'll still need some fuel for other stuff like Classic.

Our LHS, Baton Rouge, La. currently stocks C/L PowerMaster 10/22(11/11) and Morgan/Omega 10/22(11/11) He just started stocking the Morgan C/L blend when he realized they made it. He has Stocked (5) cases of the Morgan blend. He is donating a case for our Oct. contest which we will use as event winner awards. I understand that a few of our La. fliers are using the Morgan fuel with good results. There should be plenty available at the hobby shop for those that need fuel on our contest weekend. The LHS is only about a mile from the air park. I don't know the price, but I believe it is ($18-19.00) gal. I will get a quote and post it. I have not tried it yet, because I still have plenty of PowerMaster. One individual is using Wildcat fuel and reinforcing it with castor and has great engine runs. I believe he ends up w/ 20%oil w/ about 8% castor. He is running Avistar 61's and RO JET 76.

I just located a source for nitro, that's the good news . . . the bad news is that it's $36.36 per gallon for 93%. This is from a shop that builds race boats and the owner tells me he has to pay $1,600.00 for a 44 gallon drum. The last time I bought nitro I paid just over $20.00 per gallon. Is this why Powermaster has gone up in price?? Are all fuels going up??  The last gallon jug I have of PM is marked $17.99; maybe I should buy some more tomorrow.

How much would fuel be with out nitro?   Some countries are flying without nitro in their fuels. VD~ H^^

RSM sells custom blended fuel. They can provide almost anything you want. I have purchased 5% Nitro- 20% Castor to 35% Nitro-25% Castor. I use Castor for lube because I am running vintage engines.
Just another source for fuel.

Nitro is hard to get and very expensive in most of the world. In the late 40's and the 50's the Japanese used Nitro Benzene instead of Nitro Methane. If an engine has 10.5-11.0 to 1  compression ratio it will run very well on no Nitro fuel. You can run no nitro (FAI fuel) in almost any engine. A little Nitro makes needle setting friendlier. Mixing FAI fuel with 5% Nitro fuel will probably give very good runs as long as the engine has 9.5 to 1 compression ratio or higher. So many engines are high compression today so that they will perform well on FAI fuel.

$37 doesn't sound too bad, ~$4 a gallon of finished fuel.
