VIRUS ALERT
« on: May 21, 2008, 05:57:25 AM »
  Hi All;

  Just when you think you are safe. Yesterday I was hit by a virus that took several hours to get rid of. This was a "BAD" one. It came in undetected riding on an email. Norton would not clean it up. I had to use XP Advanced software.

  Name --- adrevolver
  Description --- Heuristic Trojan and malware loader that runs thirdparty illegal software.
  Severity --- SEVERE

 In the blink of an eye I had 148 files infected. My system is clear of it now so any emails I send now are not infected with thus thing. Please everyone check all incomming emails and macke sure they have been scanned. This was not a pleasent experience.

Bill
I use McAfee at home and Norton at work but I have never heard of XP Advanced software.  Is this a Microsoft application that can be downloaded from them or is it third party virus software.  The "XP" seems to implie it is Microsoft.  Sorry to hear about your trouble viruses are a real problem in the computer industry, I could spend hours discussing this issue.

 HI Andy;

  Yes it is from Micro-Soft. It's full name is XP Advanced Defender. It upgrades and sifts out viruses automatically. I do nothig but OK to have them removed. You have to buy it of course but it was worth it to me. Yesterday was a horror story.

Humm.. I just did a google search for "adrevolver" and all the hits I received says it's just a cookie which is fairly harmless. Maybe a mix up with the name...

I do not nor have I ever ran any antivirus software and have really never had a problem. I do run a couple free anti-spy ware programs once in a while to clean out anything that might sneak past my normal "just being cautious".. But they rarely find anything except tracking cookies which again are pretty harmless.

Two simple rules that keep me out of trouble.. Never open an email attachment that I haven't asked for and never visit a web site that I'm not sure is a legitimate business. Guess I've been lucky...

 Bob;

  According to XP Advance it is not the adrevolver you are wotrried about, it is what comes in with it. I guess the correct term is what has attached itself to it. I am computer illiterate when it comes to this part.  LOL It is a Trojan Horse type of virus. Once it is in it goes everywhere. That's about all I know about it, except that now it is gone. I am just passing on the info that there is something out there that ain't funny.

No it sure ain't funny.. I have helped a few club members rid systems of various bugs and it ain't even fun. Still wonder how connected the people that write these things and the companies that sell the anti-virus programs are. I am pretty sure if I was the CEO of say McAfee I would be pretty happy anytime a news worthy virus was discovered.

  Thanks for the update on the virus. My kids and my wife also use the computer and I know they open the dumb jokes that people forward. I am lucky that I have good kids tho. They actually do come to Dad first when things go wrong. We have had virus's and they s*ck! Been a few years but no fun. Better run the updates tonight and Thanks!

      Thanks, Bruce
