Plans for your control line stuff when you go?
« on: January 11, 2016, 06:47:44 AM »
    Hello all:

At our monthly club meeting, yesterday, this question was mentioned for discussion.  Our club is probably  similar to most other clubs as it consists of old men who have horded many CL supplies over the past years.  We all thought that it would be a shame to allow all of this good stuff to be discarded when we go.

What are your plans for your stuff when you go to the great circle in the sky?

                                                                                                                          Be well,

                                                                                                                          Frank McCune

Well I'm 33 now, hopefully it's gonna be a while... I would suspect anything i got will be useless by then. For the stuff that's still useful, my kids can have it. They're 4 now and I'd like to think they will enjoy this hobby for their lifetime

Someday, somebody's widow will have every bit of modeling stuff in the universe, and nothing she can do with it.  mw~

Isn't that the truth.. Like most clubs most of us already have more stuff than we can use, with few new members coming in I suspect it will eventually end up in a land fill. The engines may survive as curiosity items to some collectors but that's about it.

I am sure my stuff will end up like most everyone else's , in a landfill somewhere. My Grandchildren have no interest in it whatsoever.  Control Line flying will eventually be extinct I would guess.  We will just ride that mule till it dies.

It's hard to know what lies ahead but right now I have a couple engines and a few other things that will be donated to the AMA museum.  I do have grandkids,  one flying now so we'll see what the interest level is with them later on.  I know I would like to see as much of this stuff (all of us) go back into the active group of modellers and not get into landfills.  I'm thinking to build a few simple airplanes and sell at cost or donate through the local hobby shop to get new people started.  Our equipment is hard to find for the new lay person and they get little to no exposure to it.  I've sold a few planes that way and assume they may be flying somewhere.  To me that's better than letting the family chuck it in the trash.  I'll admit I have a chunk of my net worth in the collection and it is a certain kind of investment I could need in the future but I'd like to see most of it help maintain the sport for a few going forward.

What a bunch of cheerful replies!

Very different world now than what we grew up in. Just facing the truth.

In a way I'm glad I won't be around for what the future holds. I remember walking into a Sears store in North Hollywood and buying a shot gun, I remember when getting stopped by a cop at 4 AM in Van Nuys with a bunch of guns in the back seat was easily explained away by just telling him we were going hunting. I remember flying at the local school grounds and remember when going to a hobby shop was fun. I also remember when kids were held responsible for their actions, respected all adults and thought aviation was cool. I remember playing cops an robbers at school without fear of being expelled. Different world and I don't like it..

A few years back my brother died and no will to be found. Mom was natural executor by law but too old to deal with it so the courts allowed me to take that off her hands

Most are aware that passing without a will can be real problematic. In this case a lot of folks came out of the wood work with this or that claim against the estate... That was actually easy to deal with

The hardest part was sifting through all his stuff and trying to figure what to do with it all. Sorting, categorizing, and trying to estimate value is very time consuming and difficult.

When you are a court ordered executor you may NOT just throw it all away, give it away, donate it, or sell it, without documenting why you decided that disposal method...They demand an verifiable accurate estimate of the estate value for Taxes

With a will this is usually not an issue, and in most states keeps you out of probate courts

I still need to update our wills
I still need to catalog all this stuff for my son (he will be our executor)
We are leaving each of our children specific proportions of the Real Property minus any "stuff"
And giving my son legal authority to dispose of all the "stuff" as he see fit does not burden him with trying to fight with a sister about a few hundred$$ or thousand$$ more IF he had sold all the "Stuff" as her proportion of the total estate

A lot of what we are trying to do with our wills is prevent what we have seen on both our families over the years...the bickering and squabbling and out right theft of "stuff"

Well! I have told my wife for years that it is her insurance policy. When I am gone all she has to do is put an add in the paper. HAVE TOYS, NEED MAN. How do you think I was able to justify having a Harley and all these planes and motors.

I have several great grand kids that come over and drool all over my planes and stuff. We will see if they are still interested in a few years. Heck, I'm only 75. I had a valve job done on my heart 4 years ago, and the doctor said my heart looks way better than the rest of me. LOL. She said just be carefull crossing the street. I said I still ride my Harley, and she said all bets are off. LOL.

I did not choose when I was going to be born, and I don't think I will get to choose when I die. I have given away planes for others to learn on, and sold a few of my R/C planes. I still have way to many. I told my wife we need to add on to the basement so I have more room for more. I got the look, if you are married you know what that is. It is for sure my things will go somewhere. Maybe a museum. I have many old engines that I have collected over the years when I was working. Quite a few old spark ignition motors. There may or may not be any market for those when I am gone.

my focus on having a will post above did not answer the question

Fortunately my son (34) and grandson (6) love helping and playing with all models and running glow engines

Pretty much why I am so interested in accumulating repair parts for most of my OLD SKOOL engines

I (or someone else before me) got 30~40 years use/life out a many of these engines.

I would like my son/grand son to be able to leave them to their sons/daughters if they are so inclined

I imagine 40~50 years from now a running a not yet worn out Fox 35x may still be a lot of fun to play with on a 100+ year old VooDoo  ( even if the fuel is $150 a gallon)

The time is now to thin the collection if you don"t want to see it end up in the land fill or sold for a 10% of it's value.  Putting a value on your collection with stickers or tags just gets lost in noise of your passing but it's better than nothing.  I just saw that with the passing of one of our club members.  The collection of C/L, trains and boats went for pennies on the dollar at the on line sale.  Only the guns did well.  Don't let the "estate experts" work you over.  Sell now at market value or less so your spouse will have something more than pocket change.  I know it's hard to let go of the "treasures" you have collected but they don't offer any comfort when you are in the ground.  If you have planed well for your heir I guess it doesn't really matter, but how many of us have.  Having helped with two estate sales in the past year I know it's time to get my house in order.  We are going to have some great sales of Sage fly rods, Lionel trains, tube Hi-Fi stero, classic speakers and drag race cars and parts real soon.

Richard (and others) in the Fireballs C/L club have been VERY generous to a few of us newcomers.  They have GIVEN us planes, advice, and huge discounts on engines and whatnot.    As a newcomer to C/L, I think it is extremely valuable for the existing members to recycle any of their dust-collecting equipment and stoke the fires for some people entering the hobby.

I do the same for those entering into R/C gliders -- I gave away some old (to me) R/C systems (TX, RX, servos) to allow a newcomer to get flying.   What goes around comes around.  One man's junk is another man's treasure.

I am 37, so I hope I don't have to worry about this for a looong time!

I too have been the benefactor of some great generosity from our local crew of fliers.

Brent and Dane, the few of us left could have some fun with being the last of the control-line flyers. Secret meetings, hidden flying sites, secret handshakes, ect.

I also don't have to worry about that for quite awhile (Lord willing). I will have to worry about my dad's estate...getting it all into a pile for the Viking funeral  LL~

What ever we do or buy we hope to get more out of it than what we put into it. I have been in this hobby in one form or another all my life. I started building stick and tissue when I was about 8 years old. If I lost all of my modeling stuff today, it has already paid me more than I ever put into it. I still have my last R/C pattern plane that I have thought about selling, but the memories are to hard to part with since I do not need the money. And my kids love that plane. I have some other R/C planes that I have been flying for 40 years. My wife said it would be like sellling one of the family. I have sold a few that I knew went to a good home.

My kids even though they do not participate in the hobby, still know all about it and what to do with what I have. When I was flying R/C pattern they always went with me and were my helpers and encouragers. They still kid me because when I was younger I flew many gallons of Fox Super Fuel while they were my stooges. When I got back into control line they said I had come full circle. LOL. It has been a great hobby along with many learning experience's. We learn among other things, how to solve problems, how to read and understand plans and instructions, how to work with our hands and create something out of raw materials. We learn things you cannot learn anywhere else. You just cannot put a price on that.

about 8 years ago a family friend approached me and told me their father had died and they needed help figuring out how to deal with the huge pile of model airplanes, engines and other stuff. They had no idea what the stuff was or what wing went with what fuselage. The collection happened to be RC models so I helped them catalog the stuff. Regardless if it's RC or CL the result is the same, it needs to be looked over by someone who knows what they are looking at and gets the stuff to a swap meet or auction.

about a 1/3 was trash and went into the dumpster but the other 2/3 was all good stuff, we were finding engines in boxes, drawers and all sorts of places. In the end we took the collection to an auction in the Wichita Kansas area and it all got sold. They were happy because it they got some money out of it and it was taken care of.

At least some of you guys have someone who MIGHT be interested in using your stuff to keep our sport alive.

I have nobody - never married, no kids, no grandchildren.

One nephew who could care less.

Hopefully, the Brodak museum will be open before I check out.
Since I will probably be married soon, my wife will be instructed to, when I pass, donate everything to the museum.

Besides model aircraft stuff, there is lots more that she will inherit.
