Picture of a test stand..... anybody got one?
« on: October 10, 2007, 06:31:38 PM »
I am looking to improve my test stand setup and need ideas.

I just have my engine mount screwed to a board with a 2 oz tank tied on with bailing wire. I clamp it in the vise on the bench.

Thanks
Paul

This is what I built.
It's 2x4s, 2x6 and a piece of scrap particle board, all held together with drywall screws.

It's heavy enough that I don't need to bolt it down and it will easily hold a 40 size motor ( that is the biggest I've run on it) but I'm sure it will also hold down a 46 with no problem.

It's nice and portable and I store it upright, under my workbench when not in use.

This is what I use.  It looks a horrible oily mess, but it works for me and packs away into a fairly small space. The board on which the home made engine clamp is mounted, is itself bolted to a childs folding chair.  The original back was discarded and replaced with a piece of aluminium sheet with that bell looking object attached.  The bell thing is actually a retractable clothes line that can be extended and used to tie the whole mess to a screwdriver stuck into the ground when running the bigger and more hairy chested engines that would otherwise tip over the chair and bring the whole test running program to an early end.  The fuel tank is just a glass bottle.

Here are a few...not so elaborate:

First is an ancient EZ-Just, mounted on a board. Add weight to the board as necessary to "Hold 'er down".  ;D
One problem with this mount is that smaller engines must be run without muffler because of the screw arrangement. If you build something like this, have the wingnuts on the bottom.

Second is another commercial stand, don't remember the brand...came as a kit. Good stand for medium size engines, not so good for small ones without modification. Mounted on a board so necessary weight can be added for stability.

Next pic is some "red neck" stands, cut out for various engines (mostly before I got the second mount. The small board mounts are for various small engines. Center one for Cox engines. Note the choke tube cutout for the Sure Start's. One on right has slot for crankcase rear bolts on a Mk. 17 diesel. The small board mounts are usually held with a big "C" clamp (keep it tight).

Edit: The white wire in the first two pics is 12 ga. electrical copper wire used to position the tank.

Test stands soon from Brodak
« Reply #6 on: October 11, 2007, 10:16:20 AM »
If anyone is interested, in the very near future, Brodak will be offering two test stands.

One is made of hardwood - I designed it to take engines from .049s up to .60s. It's very simple,
similar to the old E-Z Just.

He will also offer a very heavy duty stand, CNC'd from aluminum, designed for engines size .40 and up.

When they are available, I will post the info here, or at least the website reference.

Paul,

The link below has an excellent test stand. I have used one for several years and it solid, and it has held up well.  Caution: it is RTT (Ready To Test) so it may not be legal for CL use?  LL~

I just built a version of the EZ just out of some1.25" maple. My friends at the club think it will hold a .60 no problem. It is mounted to a folding workmate style table(Menards $19.99). There is a clearance issue with the small engines mufflers.I have run a .36 with no problems.i can post a picture if you want.

Pictures of the Brodak engine test stands.

Here are some JPGs of the stands.

The metal one is the prototype of the heavy duty version.

The colored pictures are computer models I made of the wooden stand, both assembled and exploded.
