piano keyboard stand as field bench
« on: June 07, 2022, 08:57:41 AM »
Guys,
Anyone use a piano keyboard stand as a field bench or plane holder? I've seen several "X" style adjustable versions that look like it would work. I hate having to work on a ship on the ground and these "X" style stands fold nicely to fit into the car. Seem with some foam pipe insulation would be good to sit the plane on or add a board as a bench? If you use this, what suggestions do you have for selecting one?

I saw one of the scale guys using one at the Northwest Regionals this year.  It looked pretty handy.

Thinking about it, you'd want to consider what would happen if the wind was blowing.

Quite a few of our top stunt guys around here use PVC pipe contraptions to the same end; they only hold the plane up about a foot off the ground, but you could pick your height.

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

Tim,
Thanks for the input. Your comment about the wind got me thinking that maybe we would need to have some PVC tubing slipped on the bottom cross legs to add tip stability. That might make using a less expensive light weight stand possible.

I have a PVC rack for the car.  Also, I have a folding card table.  For some tasks, I sit at the table.  For standing work, I put the rack on the table.  With my rig, worst case wind scenario is a plane directly on the table that blows off.

Did a little bit of local Music Store search and found a great used stand for $15. I added some pipe foam cover and a few zip ties and we are good to go. This stand can adjust to various heights and is well built, weighs about 15#. It folds flat and fits nicely across the back of my car. Now I don't have to bend over or get wet knee caps to fuel or install batteries.

Another photo with the plane in place. Works well and is adjustable in height.

Works superbly. Got mine off of Craigslist for short money. Pipe insulation on the top part as shown above. Stole the idea from Joe Daly!
